That's news to me. Where'd you get that info? Even NVIDIA recommends a minimum GT 430 or GT 240 for 3D and at best, Sandy Bridge only meets HD 5450/8500 GT/9400 GT.

Re: "Coming Soon" Build

Your build, even with HD 5870 CrossFire is unlikely to use more than 700W full load (e.g. Furmark). Going with 850W is probably just for capacitor aging. With just a single HD 5870, you're probably looking at less than 400W full load. Even lower if you go with the HD 5850.

Those and I guess minor gaming. Llano doesn't quite have the GPU power for enthusiast-level gaming. Iirc, performance is supposed to be comparable to a Radeon HD 5670.

Re: DDR3 RAM Pricing

Individual chips in batches of 1000 or more, could even be 10K or more (normally it's 1K) Prices are due to drop even more due to demand. Less people need DDR1 or 2 so the manufacturers are tooling up for DDR3 But since it's a major commodity sold on the markets, you're not the only one asking. Pri...

Re: DDR3 RAM Pricing

*sigh* I guess it's anybody's guess... Oh well, I think I'll just monitor prices for now. Tried researching and the articles I've found seem to indicate prices haven't bottomed out yet. By the way, how does the DRAM spot price work? Because DRAMeXchange shows spot price of 3.83 for 2GB DDR3 1333, 1....

Re: DDR3 RAM Pricing

Hmm, how do you think RAM prices will be in a couple of months? The Kingston 2x4GB DDR3 1333 is currently $142.99 on Amazon (same kit is $175 on Newegg). I need the RAM but I won't be building my system until December or January. Think I should buy now or do you guys think prices will drop further?

Re: Building a rig for my sister

Yeah, much as I love the 600T something like the CM690II will get you the drive space, still move some nice air, and free up another 100 for another 2gb RAM. Instead of adding another 2GB stick of RAM, why not go with 2x4GB modules? Nowadays, I'm seeing 2x4GB DDR3 1333 kits for ~$150. Lynnfield doe...

Re: Min Allowable Voltages?

HD 3850, 95W TDP, I think, which probably equates to 8A on 12V. Iirc, that Cooler Master PSU is only good for 400W but that build shouldn't be pushing anywhere close to 400W. Why not do the usual torture tests: MemTest, IntelBurnTest, Prime95, Furmark. If all tests except Furmark pass, then it's pro...

Re: Min Allowable Voltages?

Assuming those voltage readings are accurate, there's nothing wrong with the +3.3V and +12V rails. Iirc, the ATX spec allows for ±5% tolerance.
+3.3V: +3.135 V to +3.465 V
+12V: +11.40 V to +12.60 V

$200 with a 2-year contract on AT&T. Think it was $600 off contract. If you actually pay full price for phones, that's on par with other smartphones.

Re: Editorial: What’s Wrong with the Apple TV?

I'm not buying an Apple TV (walled garden and all that) but I have to say the article does sound like a rant. Apple likes its closed environment. I don't see how you can buy an Apple product and expect to be able to play MKV or God-forbid, even AVI on it. Apple has never included support for AVI, MK...

Re: Bluetooth module for a laptop?

Question, how small was the dongle he's using? Because I have one of those really tiny ones which don't really protrude much from the laptop. It doesn't get in the way even when I dump the laptop inside my backpack.

Kind of. I think the 980x boxed cooler is around the same level as a Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, or a Zalman Performa. A good single fan solution; which would be great if they started putting that in every box instead of that terrible little one. But I am thinking more of a Frio or NH-U12P like se...

Re: Sandy Bridge

Would it really be that hard for Intel to come up with a heatsink/fan combo that could match the $50-60 air coolers out there. They all seem pretty much the same, take 6-8 heat pipes, run them up to some fins, drop a 120mm fan on both sides. Isn't that kinda what comes with the i7-980X already? htt...

Sandy Bridge

We just got AMD Bulldozer news a couple of days ago. Now, it's Intel's Sandy Bridge turn: The Sandy Bridge Preview If Intel's roadmap and pricing hold true, then the Core i5 2400 should give you an average of 23% better performance than the Core i5 760 at the same price point. If we compare shipping...
