Re: Memtest86+ LAST VERSION : 2.01

I get most of my free tools via http://www.majorgeeks.com - don't have to look all over to keep my fave tools up to date. Plus a nice daily dose of weirdness and/or humor in the "Way Off Base" section.

Re: Windows Media player 11

I recently installed VLC media player (free download via majorgeeks.com) and it beats the other DVD players I've tried (Power DVD, Win DVD, the one in Nero 7, etc.) as well as plays most other types of audio and video files too. It would be great at twice the price... ;)

Re: Just bought the cheapest PSU Newegg sells

I think both jonnyguru.com and hardwaresecrets.com recently did reviews of no-name, budget PSUs. Some did well, but poorly designed for systems that rely on the 12V rail, others not so...

Re: required PSU wattage for the system

Most systems don't really need more than a proper 300-400W PSU with the power distributed across the rails as the system needs. Most these days need most of the power to be available on the 12V rails. One thing to be sure is that you have the proper array of connectors. Some systems now need an 8-pi...

Re: Rocketfish - Lian Li rebadge case

I nabbed a couple of those Rocketfish cases too - can't beat the deal! Did you remove the H-shaped aluminum from the front intake opening? I have found that that metal causes noisy interactions with many of the fans I have here - particularly the stock one, but most others as well. The same shape me...

Re: Intake and outake fan needed

The Zalman F3 is a more powerful fan than most that come supplied with cases while being reasonably quiet. Comes with a resistor rig to drop the voltage to 7 and silicone pins for isolating any vibes. Can be found at reasonable prices in the States.

Re: Scanner software

Once the scanner's Twain driver is in place, you can scan images directly into a program like IrfanView (free, and excellent, download - I get mine from majorgeeks.com). It has the ability to acquire Twain devices and grab images directly from them. IrfanView can then save it in any of many differen...

A proper disclaimer for any acrylic case review is that acrylic cases are NOT appropriate for day in-day out use. They are really only useful for trade shows, computer store displays, science fair projects and similar. The reasons are well known. Even appropriate uses are apparently a stretch for th...

It must be difficult to start up a new techie forum when all the old boys have cornered all the talent. It was hard for me to find ten interesting threads to reply to in order to qualify for the contest this month...

I use a combo of TrendMicro.com's PC-Cillin (comes free with VCom's SystemSuite 5 utility package) and Sygate firewal; (which also comes with SS5). Both are more than good enough and very low drag. . It seems that Kaspersky is among the best of the AV software though you do have to pay for it. I thi...

There have been previews of the new ULi chipset on the OCWorkbench.com and the Anandtech.com sites. It looks to be more than real - easily the equal of the nF4 set and mui more flexible.
. I'll probably go with it for my first 64 bit system when I feel the need.

Yes, the Via drivers have been very stable for the last few years. That's about all I use on my sock-A builds. My own main system is baset on the Abit KW7 (Via KT880). Rock solid.

Yup, a good external enclosure (lots of the folks at AT seem to like the Bytecc) with both FW and USB2 connections with a cheap drive from the Sunday circulars (big box stores with absurdly low after-rebate prices). should do it.

That mobo is definitely gross overkill for most users. And since you didn't provide much in the way of info as to what your purposes are, one can't reall make any kind of specific recommendation. But right now the sweet spot re. performance/dollar is in the 160-250GB range. I'd buy the latest genera...
