hmm, a flawed platter near the end of the drive? That's something I didn't even think about. No wonder Compaq had such a high rate of return back in the mid to late 90's for bad HDD's. I remember when they used the Quantum BigFoot drives in their systems...said the larger platter size would enable ...

did you write Zero's to the drive as Apoptosis said? This returns your drive to a RAW state. Looks like the drive was formatted with a hidden partition Some OEM's do this, they then can install all the CAB files from your OS to here Writing zeros to the drive will delete everything no matter what i...

Man, I'm with you Apop, that is something I've never seen before, except in the instance where part of the HD (usually close to half) had been allocated by the manufacturer for the System Save partition (automated Restore in newer computers). But these partitions can easily be disposed of, so it al...

Are you doing low level formats? If not I'd download Data Lifegaurd or WDDIAG and give it a try. WDDIAG.EXE is the best program to use when doing low-level formatting of your Western Digital IDE hard drives. It should be used with all Western Digital IDE hard drives, except the following: AC140, AC...

never seen that before personally. I am starting with the 50% point of the disk size and am slowly progressing in formatting more of the hard drives. I am going to see just how far I can format each one of these HDs. I am working on one right now to see if I can get 5 Gigs out of it. This is going ...

Why do hard drive manufacturers use half the hard drive?

I got 23 computers from HazMat when they closed in a town near where I live. I got them to rebuild and sell. They gave me a box full of 3.2 Gig hard drives. When I format for reuse, I find that they are actually 6.5 Gig HDs. Of course as I am formatting them, in the final stages of the format, FDISK...

In the manual it sais not to load the memory or the IDE drivers to save more memory for the BIOS upgrade.
The BIOS needs about 520K of memory.
I have 384MB of memory installed on this mobo, so I am in good shape.

Should I load the memory while flashing the bios?

I am flashing the bios on an Aopen AX63 Pro. motherboard. When I use the windows startup disk to get me into DOS, is it better to use a startup disk that doesn't load the memory. Or do I need to load the memory? Or does it matter eather way? James

Does turning the floppy controller (FDC) off in the bios cause the computer to run without errors? and are you getting this code 10 before the OS starts to load? ... or is it the OS that is giving you the code 10 error? If it is the OS giving you the error, can you still boot to a floppy?... it sho...

A couple of things tyou might want to do before you write off the board. 1. Pull the floppy cable, make sure there are no bent pins on the board or the actual FDD, sometimes people put the cables on wrong and bend a pin, another issue is that sometimes the included FDD cable has no slot to line up ...

James, Welcome to the forums... Just curious have you flashed the BIOS before? I'd persoanlly flash the BIOS, but I'd not use the live update. Get the floppy disk out and do it the old school way ;) See if that clears things up. MSI will not void your warranty if you flash the BIOS. I can't do it t...

According to MSI site, you do have a floppy controler, you may have to go into the bios and reset/set it to on. If that doesn't work, the MoBo/Bios may be bad. http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=615 On-Board Peripherals On-Board Peripherals include: - 1 flop...

No floppy disk controller on MSI Mobo

I have just built a new computer using a MSI KM4AM-V mobo. There is no floppy. The device manager in XP Pro. tells me, " This device can not start Code 10 " I have installed a differant OS so it is not in the OS. Is this a motherboard problem or a BIOS problem? Of course I can not flash th...
