Re: what's a good hard drive for running an OS on?

I wouldn't recommend any SSD. Iirc, some cheapy SSDs with JMicron controllers can be slower than mechanical HDDs after a while. That's what I read in passing somewhere and always had that in the back of my head. (concern). Now that Intel has a somewhat reasonably priced SSD I might spring for it. t...

Re: what's a good hard drive for running an OS on?

What kind of SSD was it? Let me pose the question this way: Any value/cheapest/most economical SSD going to blow away your typical 7200rpm HD or even the latest VelociRaptor 10K rpm hard drives? For an SSD boot drive, I'm only concerned about lowest pricest and highest performance. Size doesn't matt...

Re: Intel or AMD?

/agree

Go for the AMD. Sure you may not save a ton of money, but it's savings vs. the small increase in performance going for intel. (at the same price point)

Re: what's a good hard drive for running an OS on?

Is it really that noticeable? Startup, shutdown, and start up applications (games?) I've been tempted to buy a SSD boot drive a little while now, but wasn't sure if I was ready for it... Also, any programmers out there think it would impact linux kernel compile times much? (or any large compiles for...

I didn't think the opterons were made in AM3 or AM2+ socket. Pretty sure they're different. (?)

Congrats!

I like LR for the smaller community! Other major hardware sites just seem to have waaaay too large of a community. I fold for LR because I enjoy the forums here, otherwise I would have never bothered.

Re: New Gaming PC

I would say go for an ATI 5770 or 5830 if you can afford to. Little more performance, and should run slightly cooler than 240.

Re: Retailer lists AMD phenom II x12-cores

Anyone see motherboards for these processors? (I assume they're pretty damn expensive.) I'd love to get one for a desktop linux system. Do I "need" 12 cores, probably not, but that's not the point! :) In all seriousness, I could possibly need one for work in the future, and since I'm not p...

ATI Eyefinity. Mainly because multi monitor support is what I'm after. Aside from that, I'm an ATI/AMD fan! :)

That's why I fold at work (mostly). Electricity is free (sort of), just have to bug your co-workers to fold for you, and explain that fah is a not some sort of spyware. Better than facing the wife with insane electricity bills! I already have to justify why I have and NEED so many computers at home,...

just an observation...it seems Vectrexer stopped folding completely as soon as the contest ended..Hmmm hahahah! On that note, my points dropped considerably (percentage wise, as my points were nothing spectacular anyway). Xmas shutdown at work, most of the PC's are off - hence the major drop. I'll ...

Re: ** Official 2009 F@H WAR Competition Thread **

I have no idea what are you guys arguing about? The rules were laid down at the beginning and should not change after. 6 CPU's are given to the members of the winning team (team F) and the 4 remaining are being raffled between those who PARTICIPATED in the other teams, were not excluded or did not ...

It may be viewed 'unfair' if contributor's are given entries based on points - given the obvious financial restraints (nice video card(s), electricity costs) and/or resources involved (getting a friend(s) with nice hardware to contribute and/or workplace resources). Given the nature of the rules of...
