Re: Son wants to expand storage on xbone
It is the xbox one s, probably a gen or two back from now. So now I've talked myself into getting a portable drive enclosure, usb powered. He saw a 4TB official xbox drive for $120 (obviously platter) so now I have to convince him that a 1TB or 2TB SSD is worth the extra money for less storage. I do...

Son wants to expand storage on xbone
My son wants to get an external drive for his xbone, as I am researching I see that most external portable drives still use basically laptop platter drives. 2TB versions around $100 and they are going to get speeds of about 140>150Mbps. If I put a 1 or 2TB SSD into a portable drive enclosure it will...

Re: Dead cpu?
Perhaps get the cheapest 9th gen mobo you can find for a test. If the cpu is bad you are only out the cheap mobo and can buy a new 9th gen processor. If the cpu is fine but the mobo is bad then you can get another mobo for your CPU or sell the CPU and get an even newer mobo and cpu. Sucks that you d...

Re: Win7/8 free upgrade to Win10
Well I can safely say that the free upgrade to Win10 from 7/8 still works. I have switched over 4 computers to Win10, all worked. Three of them were using the same Technet key I used years ago, activated fine. My daughter's Win8.1 laptop upgraded fine as well. The only ones that didn't were two PCs ...

Re: Win7/8 free upgrade to Win10
I decided my HTPC would be the guinea pig, and installed last night. I downloaded Win10 Upgrade Assistant, installed directly from net as an upgrade to keep apps and files. It took about an hour on that dinosaur but it shows as activated. Some things didn't make the upgrade, probably because those p...

Win7/8 free upgrade to Win10
Has anyone here successfully done this? Does it work with a fresh install using my Win7 Key, or do I have to upgrade from the same drive that Win7/8 is on? How would this work with a dual-boot situation? ie: Win7 on one SSD, Win8.1 on a separate SSD with bootloader defaultiing to Win7 unless overidd...

Re: Using Spectrum Splitter/Amp
Not a powered antenna, but a 20yo big old school antenna, the kind you have to fold out once you get it on the roof. It was a real PITA to get it up into the small area above my vaulted ceiling but necessary since my HOA rules say no rooftop antennas and cable hadn't been run to our subdivision yet....

Using Spectrum Splitter/Amp
So, I cancelled my Spectrum TV service. I kept the 200Mbps internet and landline. It appears that the line from the outside box carries both the tv signal and the internet signal and plugs in to the "input", then is amplified and split to the combo cable internet/voice modem through the ou...

Re: MicroSD cards for phones
I kept it exFAT but I also found out some things...exFAT is proprietary MSoft, you can easily use Windows to format to it, but third parties have to pay a license to use or include it in their software. I use EASEus Partition Master, it only recognizes it as "other" and calls it a super fl...

Re: MicroSD cards for phones
I bought a Sandisk 128GB MicroSDXC UHS-1, it did not immediately show up with a drive letter when I used the adapter to plug in to a Win7 PC. When I did assign it a drive letter, it first wanted to scan all sectors for errors, after that it showed up fine and is listed as exFAT. Do you all use exFAT...

Re: Too early for wirelessAX router?
Thought I'd give you a follow up...I pulled the trigger on the Netgear Nighthawk AX8, and so far I like it. I have older adapters, the Realtek based n600 ones work fine with it, even an old Rosewill N300 single band that works fine with it. Funny how only my Edimax AC1200 USB3 adapter gets moody som...

Thanks! How has your wireless been, or do you even use it as such? I have the same charter 200mbps service that you have, just wondering how that translates to number of devices going at the same time... we have three 1080i tvs that I'd like to switch to streaming along with my son on his xboxone do...

Re: NETGEAR Nighthawk Pro Gaming XR500 WiFi Router Review
Now that you've had this router for 10 months, do you have any updated insights on it's range and effectiveness? How many updates has DumaOS made to the OpSys since you've had it, perhaps features added? Still your top choice for under $300?

Too early for wirelessAX router?
Been researching routers, some of the newest with wireless AX look promising with MU-MIMO and anywhere between 8 and 12 streams...to be honest I doubt I'll have any AX adapters for a while yet, so I would just be using it on AC and N mode. The only problem with getting an older router is that they a...

Re: Network Adapter Works in Win8.1 but not Win7
Thanks. I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling both with and without reboot. Sometimes it shows the ethernet controller in device manager without a yellow hazard mark and with no driver installed, and when I try to install any driver (even the one MS Update wants to install) it then give...

Network Adapter Works in Win8.1 but not Win7
I have a weird issue. My onboard LAN network adapter (Realtek 8111E Gigabit) stopped working in Windows 7. I get the Microsoft "Code 1" even after I uninstall the adapter then try to reinstall drivers, I even pulled out the old MOBO driver disk to install the original driver, it won't inst...

Hmmm I was not really thinking SanDisk but I'm glad you guys recommended it because I was looking at the Samsung EVO cards. I'll check out the SanDisks, thanks for the info!
