Re: ATI vs Nvidia and AMD vs Intel

Checking gaming benchmarks between AMD and Intel show very little (If any) advantage in favor of Intel, and I haven't noticed any instabilities from an AMD PC. The $100-$150 difference is enough to be able to upgrade the CPU if at any point you feel that the performance of an outdated chip requires ...

Re: 2300$ build

If you're planning to overclock, the 1055t is identical to the 1090 for 100 USD less. The only difference is the lower (and locked) multiplier, but with some good OC skillz you should be able to get it over 4 ghz.

I wouldn't be surprised. I liked the rules for the ibuypower contest which required activity in the forums.

Re: Need input for system I'm building

I believe the 1055 is an identical chip to the higher clocked 1090, which means that overclocking it to 3.2 ghz should be perfectly stable. At that clock you're approaching the 3.4 ghz of the highest end phenom II X4 chip. For such similarly priced chips, the 1055 is really a steal.

Re: ATI vs Nvidia and AMD vs Intel

If you're on a budget, AMD/ATI is definitely the most bang for your buck. You can get a top end AMD quad core processor for under 200 USD (Or an equivalent lower end processor which can be overclocked for a much cheaper solution) which will meet all of your gaming needs. Intel is definitely faster f...

Last time I had a mobo die, the case fans, cpu fan, and PSU fan would spin when power was turned on, despite the lack of a POST.

Re: 2300$ build

I'm dubious about the Matrix. The extra overclocking potential is promising, however that pricepoint is only a hundred dollars shy of getting into the 5970 range. The 2gb frame buffer won't make a huge difference in most games unless you're going for an eyefinity setup, in which case I feel you'd on...

Seems like it would be difficult to precisely use at first, but could be pretty awesome if you practiced with it until the positioning of the buttons felt natural.

Re: new build

I'd say if you're considering GTX 480's, go double 5970's. Wayyy more bang for only a little more buck, especially since you're going to be adding another 100-140 dollars for the waterblock per card. That'll bring the GTX 480 up to around 600 dollars and the 5970 up to around 740.

I hope the cooling is as good as they claim. A custom waterblock for a non-reference card would cost an arm and a leg.

Re: new computer

For a desktop, I would recommend building your own. It's pretty easy if you read online and use the instruction manual. Not only can you get a much more powerful machine for significantly less money, you usually feel a lot more pride of ownership in something you put together yourself. Check www.new...

The biggest performance upgrade I've noticed was going from HDD to SSD. Made a world of difference for day to day computing as well as boot / recovery times.

The catalyst control center should also show your temps under the overclocking utility. It's a good way to compare various temps with the %load that caused them
