ooooh....

Is it just me, or do the specs on this chassis look very hot for the price.

Only problems I can see are weight, and (comparitively) small 6-cell battery. Note that this is not really a heavy laptop, just that I have been mainly looking at 14in. and smaller models.

Heh, the coldheat. I got one of those at costco, was on sale, and came with a fancy case, and the wire cutter/stripper thing. Works fine for small wire joins, but as for soldering that heatpipe to the base, no way. You need some serious heat for that, remember, it is an assembly designed to pull awa...

Well there are a bunch of sites where you can buy laptop chassis. Two well known ones are http://www.rjtech.com and http://www.abspc.com/diy/notebookdiy.asp . We actually have a forum devoted soley to the discussion of laptop chassis here, which you can find at http://forums.legitreviews.com/viewfor...

Here's a review of that keyboard. http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1870600,00.asp As for me, I perfer my cheap logi ultraflat keyboard to any other I've ever used. I actually have a spare just in case. I noticed it's the same one used on the test setup on the recent vapochill micro review ...

I'm looking at getting an MSI MS-1012 eventually, but alas, I have little money. If I could win a barebone, that'd be great.

Meh, I knew about them. Before they merged, Coboc had a better selection. I usually look at rjtech or directron for barebones chassis. Directron has a really crappy selection, but good prices, which is good. Rjtech is the opposite...

The similar looking AMD version does have the blue LED backlighting. http://www.msicomputer.com/NB/product_s ... el=MS-1013 I'd rather go with a Pentium-M though.

Heres nvidias write-up on it, as they were the ones to develop it. Its an open standard though, so if ATI wasn't being so bullheadish, they can use it too.

I believe he's referring to the new MXM graphics cards. Supposedly you should eventually be able to just go buy one of these cards and swap it out, independent of the manufactuer of the laptop chassis. However, I have yet to see any standalone MXM cards being sold.

Yeah, wow -- that battery life does suck... When I was looking in its user manual, the battery did look pretty small, guess I should have figured. Curse, it had taken me so long to decide on a barebones. Back to the search...

Oddly enough, the unistaller from the spyware site was what worked for me. Didn't have network problems on my end, but you can try this: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm and see if it works. Basically you remove anything other than mswsock.dll, winrnr.dll, and rsvpsp.dll.

According to the user manual, there should be a similar model with a 1680x1050 screen resolution somewhere. If anyone can find this version, please post.

Well, in my opinion the best notebook chips are Intel's Pentium M. AMD's Turion is somewhat promising, but doesn't yet have much market penatration. Though, saying that AMD chips heat up too much for laptops is just plain out ignorant. If you take Intel's P4 and AMD's Athlon 64, they are both pretty...
