Re: MSoft's Patch 2/17-18/2013 took down my network

Not sure I would just start over in that case. A failed update can happen for many reasons. Anything in event viewer about the failed update? Check the windowsupdate.log file as well as there should be some hint as to what occurred there as well. MS has gotten a lot better in recent times dealing wi...

Re: MSoft's Patch 2/17-18/2013 took down my network

Not sure what OS it is, but this happens when certain updates fail and roll back. Has been this way as long as I care to remember. Better question is what is wrong with the machine that the updates failed? Edit: I have pushed updates to about 25 XP / 7 machines over the last 2 days and didnt see thi...

Its the microarch revamp. Just like Nehalem -> Sandy Bridge was. Same 22nm process, but new instructions, sockets and other things. It is expected to have a new cache design and have better power saving features.

Re: New Router Driving Me Bats**t Crazy!

Only entry that looks relevant there is: 2013-01-29 23:06:57 [5] syslog: [IPCONN] Wan[DHCP] Link was Disconnected And that is horribly vague. What brand/model is the cable modem? Most modems will only monitor the 'cable' part of the connection, which is not going down (which is good). At least we kn...

Re: New Router (or Charter?) Driving Me Bats**t Crazy!

The setting in the router allows for DHCP lease time of between 1-160 hours and I've tried many between those two points. Currently at 24 hours, I get the least amount of disconnects with that setting although far from perfect. I just wish I would have RMA'd it back to newegg before now, I have a p...

Re: New Router (or Charter?) Driving Me Bats**t Crazy!

Every 8 hours? Idle curiosity, what is your DHCP lifetime on the address you are getting? You get what you pay for. With all the effort you put into a piece of you know what. It's just better to buy a high quality router. Your time is money. Return it and buy the best you can buy. Within reason. Tho...

Re: Proxy to get around Websense

Installing something like Tor on a machine will probably be seen as worse than using a proxy to bypass the filters. Heck, if they are filtering web access, odds are he doesnt even have access to install software (I know none of my users are given that ability, if they can install software then they ...

Re: Building a storage PC

I still suggest using a separate NAS device. Grab a 1512+ for $800 add 5 drives of whatever size you want and by all means, run RAID 6 if you prefer! Problem is solved and you will be happier than using a computer for the same purpose. Exactly what I would/was recommend(ing). If for some reason the...

Re: Building a storage PC

If you are using it for a backup device then you need massive redundancy. If you have the budget to be able to afford a lot of extra hard drives or add-on units, then by all means build it for redundancy! Eh? Why do you need more redundancy for a backup device then a live storage one that typically...

Re: ASRock can kiss MY asrock

Well on a positive note, thank you for reminding me why I stick with Gigabyte almost religiously (Ill stray to ASUS from time to time if they have a board I really want).

Sucks they are trying to give you the shaft, maybe someone around these parts has a contact as ASRock that can help out?

Re: Synology 1512+ or DS413J?

I figured I would see what memory modules I have laying around here that may work to upgrade it. I dont think I have a system with dual nic's for binding plus my switch and router are not (I guess it is called) managed so they cant offer the speed of more than 1 connection anyway. Tell me the progr...

You made a good choice with the 1512+. I have one here that I use as an iscsi device only but I have done some poking around with it and it has a ton of features. Speed is really good, though I cant say for sure how it will be with the red drives. Post some test results if you get a chance, would li...

Re: Wireless Network Issues

If the antenna sticks out the back of the PC and doesnt have a cord to move it, get a different antenna / wifi card. If the rest of the PC is between the AP and the antenna the PC blocks the signal just like one would expect a largeish chunk of metal to do. Easy test, turn the computer and see if th...
