For $1500, you probably won't get hot-swap... For this project, I'm guessing you can build one for $3000 upper bound. You don't get the nice form factor, though.

Re: Externel Enclosure that is powered off USB

I got this from Newegg. Works great so far. Got it when I replaced my old 30GB IDE laptop HDD. No problems with not enough USB power with the laptops I've used it with (Dell Inspiron 1000, B120, E1405, Toshiba Satellite U30?-S5077). Although I think that might depend more on the hard drive than on t...

Re: e6600 vs e6750

I believe newer (presumably better) processors get released at the older price points, stepped lower. As a recent example, the official prices for the E8400 is cheaper than the E6850 (same price as E6750, I believe), but the specs sheet and performance benchmarks show that it's at least marginally b...

Re: Quality 350W PSU Enough?

Thanks. I haven't overclocked my GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3R-based build yet (just connected all components necessary for POST) but it's amazing how many options are customizable with it compared to the ECS mobo. I think the only thing I could change with the ECS is the time and boot order. Oh well, I gues...

Where'd you get the Toushirou wallpaper? If you can't remember, can you maybe upload it somewhere and send me the link? Thanks! :)

Re: Nividia's Imminent Demise?

as for laptops surpassing desktops, i hate that. i absolutly hate it. why? because people are so stupid. the only people that really need laptops are buisness people who either work at home and work and that travel alot. if you arent one, then why dont you get a real computer that you can upgrade? ...

Re: E6600 with D975XBX2...

Saves energy when your PC is at idle. Iirc, it's part of the Intel Speedstep feature so you really can't change the multiplier. You can keep it at its maximum if you disable speedstep on your motherboard.

Re: Nividia's Imminent Demise?

Yep. Those building their own PCs opt for discrete graphics, but majority of off-the-shelf budget PCs and laptops still have integrated. I reckon 100% of gamers have discrete graphics cards, but the rest of the population would probably forgo the additional expense.

Q6600 Cooler

I'm planning on getting a Q6600 and overclocking it. Nothing extreme, just around 3.0GHz. What CPU cooler would you suggest for under $50 shipped? I'm currently looking at the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro and the Scythe SCMNJ-1000 Ninja Mini. Which is easier to install? I've got the vertical clearan...

Re: Quality 350W PSU Enough?

Sorry for digging up this old post. Question, which setup did you go for in the end? Because I bought an Intel Celeron 430/ECS 945GCT-M combo from Fry's (for cheaper than the cost of processor alone on Newegg) and there are absolutely no overclocking options in the BIOS that I could find. Not a very...

Re: Beware Of Norton 3 Use License SCAM!

Dunno if it was my Vista laptop with the problem but AVG was unable to clean all virii on a 3.5" HDD connected via an IDE to USB adapter. Plugged HDD to work PC (WinXP) and Symantec Enterprise edition had no problems cleaning the HDD. A second scan with AVG on the Vista laptop proclaimed the HDD squ...

Re: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Processor Review - 45nm Wolfdale

Nice review. I guess this answers my question. Q6600 it is if the Penryn quads don't come out in time. Albeit, the E8000 was really close competition, it seems that quads are still better for media related tasks. A suggestion, would it be possible to test the setups using graysky's x264 benchmark ? ...

Re: Partition Freeware

Noticeably? No, not really. I've got mine divided into three partitions - 10GB OS & programs, 4GB swap, and the rest data (includes Documents and Settings folder). I realise separating the OS and swap file to different partitions even lowers performance a bit, but at least now I don't run out of spa...

Re: Partition Freeware

Yet another vote for Gparted. The LiveCD works extremely well. I used it before for partitioning multi-boot XP & Kubuntu. Now I use it all the time to prep hard drives before OS install.

Re: MAy be a silly question.

Not sure how much your budget can extend to but get a Corsair 520HX instead of the 550VX. I've got the 550VX with the same case and am now regretting my decision not to go modular. I routed the power cables behind the mobo tray and they're bunching up. Although I haven't really tried organizing it -...

E8400 vs Q6600

I'm waiting until mid-March, but if the Q9450 doesn't get released by then, I'll be getting either of the above. Question is, which would be better for video encoding? I realise that media encoding is one area where quad-cores shine but how would the E8400's higher clock speed (and higher overclock)...

I just wish I could move my 4 PATAs to my new system. And I'd like to keep my AGP video card too. I like investing in truly better components, but I hate wasting components that work beautifully. I've got the same dilemma. Not exactly a solution but I relegated the old PC to the living room and jus...

No permissions necessary. I'm guessing you just didn't copy "DGDecode.dll" from the "C:\work2\Initial Setup\" folder to the AviSynth plug-ins folder (C:\Program Files\Avisynth 2.5\plugins\).
