Re: Good FREE Testing Programs for HDDs/SSDs

Clonezilla works, but tends to be a pita to get to work properly at times.

Try Macrium Reflect, they have a free version that I have used for some HD to SSD migrations. http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

Re: Alternate Linux OS

Linux user here though I dont really have a distro preference. I tend to prefer deb (apt) over rpm though. Really depends on the application, I think I have most major distributions in use somewhere at this point. Even guilty of using Gentoo for several years quite some time ago, nothing screams pat...

Re: Upgrade with USB 3.0 card

Careful adding cards that control any type of specialized equipment like this. One of my customers makes PCB's and has a ton of specialized equipment that is computer controlled for this purpose. Some of the software that controls some of the machines is extremely picky about the strangest things an...

Re: Thecus N5550 5-Bay Home NAS Review

I just thought of one request I have for this. Mind running some quick IOPs tests on it (in whatever RAID setup it is currently in) using something like IOmeter? Would like to compare to what I see on my Synology DS1512+ using Enterprise SATA drives. Not a really good comparison, but I am guessing ...

Re: Thecus N5550 5-Bay Home NAS Review

I hear this all the time but there is problem with this statement. If you are using your RAID setup AS a backup then it IS a backup. No, it isnt. Oops, I deleted a file on accident. Restore it from RAID. Granted its wikipedia, but ill quote the first line from their 'backup' entry: In information t...

Re: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Drive Review

Except you are forgetting that ReFS is missing: named streams, quotas, EFS, hard links and other highly useful features with no suitable replacement. It may make storage 'easier' for the layman but it absolutely is not superior to NTFS. I would argue that except for the size limitations on NTFS that...

Re: Thecus N5550 5-Bay Home NAS Review

The defacto RAID type is RAID 5 as it will allow you to lose one drive and not any data. Many experts are now saying that RAID 5 is not the way to go. Hard Drives have a 3% chance of failing in the first three years of drive life, and then after that the failure rate starts rising. With five brand ...

Re: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Drive Review

3) AS for the Newegg reviews and people not knowing what they are doing... It's a bit of both. As for damaging a drive... I dropped one from 5 feet into the air while walking and it slammed into my wall corner first. I figured it would be dead, but it works fine. It hit hard enough to put a big den...

Re: Haswell range of CPUs

Not that this really affects most users of this CPU family but it bugs me that VT-D and TXT are not supported on the 'K' processors if this chart is in fact correct. Again, it really doesnt affect most but for some reason it bugs me.

Re: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Drive Review

@egloeckle: well actually the idea of the red series its actually that: pay for TLER :D I know, that part of my post was in reply to someone earlier stating they had green drives fail in raid constantly. The missing TLER is the reason for that most likely. Red drives main benefit is the TLER suppor...

Re: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Drive Review

No backup as there is no way I am going to backup TB upon TB of my dvd/bluray rips. I have the physical media so I can always re-rip it if something catastrophic happens. I am not in the market for 16 drives, it was just an example of how using more drives would seem less wasteful of space when the...

Re: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Drive Review

So, what RAID mode and stripe size would you suggest? Also, why would I do NIC teaming? The Thecus N5550 has two Gigabit ports, but there is nothing in the admin panel for bonding/teaming of the two as shown below. Is that something average home user/small business would be doing with a sub $500 NA...

Re: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Drive Review

RAID 5 is used most often (even for me) due to the cost/available space benefits for users. It is crazy to buy 4 hard drives and only be able to use the storage space of 2 due to the RAID level you choose. I still think RAID-5 is reliable enough for media streaming in a home environment. I constant...

Re: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Drive Review

Green drives are missing the TLER which is the issue. Dont run any non TLER drive in RAID if you care about your data and sanity. On that note, with drives this large, stop using RAID-5 already. There are plenty of articles out there with the math describing why, but basically the chance to lose dat...

Re: End of Radiator Leaking on CPU Water Cooling System

I am a huge fan of "Never run dye in a loop", that CPU block isnt even bad compared to what it could have been. Was the part of the radiator with the 'leaks' the bottom of how you had it mounted? The leaks could have been elsewhere with the water pooling at those points if it was. not sure...
