Re: Which CPU?
That pretty much sums it up. I went ahead and went with the bundle I referenced above, added a 23" Hanns-G monitor, MSoft Wireless Keyboard & Mouse & some cheap-o speakers. I came in at something like $377. Like I said, it's for our senior center. It's used primarily by the Director for...

Re: Which CPU?
Thanks, looks like that CPU is an awesome little sleeper. However, I think I need to go a cheaper route for the PC for the seniors. It's just not worth the extra money for the tiny amount of usage that machine sees. Probably will go AMD on it. Found a combo for $229 that knocks the total parts price...

Which CPU?
OK, I admit it, I have not kept up with processor advances, or memory for that matter. I'm a horrible, terrible person. Now I'm paying the price. I need to buy a couple of PCs. One is a traditional desktop, the other is an all-in-one (or that is what they would prefer). Neither are going to be used ...

Do routers REALLY need this?
Maybe I'm behind the times, out of touch, pick your euphemism, but is this really necessary?

Re: Laptop hit floor, go boom, now no video
In the immortal words of President Reagan, Well.... Stripped it down to just the new LCD, RAM & power switch. It starts up but nothing on the display. Wait, let me try my external monitor....I get the HP logo on the external but nothing on the LCD. I guess it could be the cable. Hmmm, maybe I ha...

Re: Laptop hit floor, go boom, now no video
I'm 99.999% sure because the new screen came with no cables. The connector is held in place on the back of the screen with tape which I re-used. I also double-checked the other end and even re-seated it to make sure. Now there's a seed of doubt sprouting in the back of my mind so I'll triple-check i...

Laptop hit floor, go boom, now no video
I might be getting out of my depth entirely because I'm thinking this might be a board issue. Anyway, had my trusty HP G62 341NR sitting on my bed, minding its own business when Stormy the Cat decided it was time to investigate. She landed beside the laptop and just close enough to the edge of the b...

Re: Komputerbay RAM
Yeah, have GSkill now & that's probably what I'll go with again. After the aforementioned funnel o' money I was trying to save a few bucks but it's obviously not worth it.

Re: Komputerbay RAM
Yeah I was not so lucky. It broke just enough to destroy the display. Killed the phone. Yeehaa
Figured the cheapo brand wasn't worth it but thought I'd ask. I remember when GSkill was maligned.
Thanks!

Komputerbay RAM
Has anyone had any experience with Komputerbay memory? I suddenly find myself in need of replacements for my old GSkill sticks because one or both are malfunctioning. I ordered a set for one of our seniors who owns an old Dell Dimension and when it arrived, one of the sticks was bad and I had to ret...

Remove slipstreamed sevice packs from disc
This is probably a bizarre question. There again, what question do I ever ask that isn't?!?!? Anyway, I have an HP TC1100 quasi-notebook/touchpad that doesn't have quite enough cajones to run anything besides XP. It has the product key for HP's XP Tablet PC OS and the only image I can find of it has...

Re: Network issue-God help me
Not rude or crude at all. That's what I really love about IT people: there's very little fluff in the conversation. It's usually straightforward and to the point and Legit Reviews is, by far, the best place I've found for answers. I've posted questions on other forums, including this question, and I...

Thanks for the tip, however, don't hold back! How do you really feel about homegroup?!?!?DL126 wrote:Might be worth mentioning....
I have seen Homegroup stuff work, but it's a p1ss poor way of doing it IMO.

Re: SATA-to-USB adapters
It has been a while but I finally got to a point I absolutely had to access a drive without initializing it. So I got one of these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002UA ... UTF8&psc=1 and it has been awesome for $45.

Re: Network issue-God help me
It's DHCP because I didn't assign any IPs. I originally set it up through Homegroup. Very simple and worked flawlessly for a couple of years. I can ping my laptop from the server but I cannot ping the server from the laptop. From the server, my laptop shows up under Network. I can access all shares ...

Re: Network issue-God help me
OK. First off, thanks for helping! Windows Firewall was running on laptop but not on server. Disabling it made no difference even after rebooting. Firewall remained disabled On both, "Home" profile is selected All network discovery, etc. are turned on. In Homegroup, all boxes are checked f...

Network issue-God help me
This might just be a bad router but there again....Nothing with me can just be easy. This is my home network which I originally set up using W7's homegroup. It worked great for a long time or until my hp laptop went down with video problems. First I acquired an older Dell laptop and put a copy of 7 ...

Re: Win 7 Laptop Will Not Boot. Period.
Well, actually I didn't think of that. But now the point is moot because it looks like the drive is toast. Strange how I can read and manipulate files on it thru Ubuntu. But in trying to run diagnostics from a boot disc, the drive isn't there. So, since I already had all his files, I removed the dri...
