Office 2013
Ill just leave these here for now... All ill say is a making a "touch screen interface" and leaving the tiny buttons on the ribbon that are not very touch screen friendly is just brilliance. Between this and the Server 2012 interface I am now fairly certain Microsoft is just trolling every...

Re: Planetside 2
Just be aware that the graphics in PS2 arent as "realistic" as something like BF3 or the more recent CoD's. Do realize that you will get into fights where 300+ (lots of times way more) people are all fighting over a single base which really beats on lesser machines (though the game is most...

It is actually free. Things you can pay for: Weapons (can be unlocked by cert points earned in game instead of RL cash) Camo Trinket items (this includes hubcaps for some of the vehicles, hood ornaments for the air vehicles, and other random stuff that really doesnt do much) Premium Account (this gi...

Re: Is Remote Desktop in XP hard to configure?
Teamviewer is excellent, we use it at work heavily. The only catch with it is the free version will detect you as being a business if you have more than x devices on a network. Not entirely sure what x is, but that seems to be how they detect home use vs business use which isnt free.

Tried CCNA, got half way through and decided networking isn't for me I'm back in limbo with no idea what I want to do, sys admin, hardware, product dev / mgmt, project mgmt; who knows Ill make my standard recommendation of "anything far, far away from being IT related". Seriously, do some...

Re: Quadro 4000 and 2 monitors at 2650x1600 ?
In theory it should work when running off display port. The reality is going to be more annoying. I run dual 30's (cinema displays) and had issues trying to get them on a single card last I tried. I ended up saving myself the headache and ended up just running dual cards. The thing to remember is th...

Re: Various Windows 8 versions
The OEM licensing verification isnt perfect, and windows activation will activate a single key multiple times without issue. It is anyone's guess how microsoft determines it, I only know how it should work legally. For building your own system though, I am not positive what component is technically ...

Below are the registry entries for .lnk files that should exist on XP. See if you have them all on the affected machine, if not try to recreate them. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk] @="lnkfile" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk\ShellEx] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk\ShellEx\{...

Re: Various Windows 8 versions
OEM versions have licenses tied to the machine they were purchased for. The license is not transferable to another machine. You are supposed to place the key code sticker on the machine to make the license valid (though i dont think anyone really does this). In the past you have been able to purchas...

Re: Powerline Network Adapter Shootout
Can you mix powerline modules from different manufacturers on the same network? Yes you can even though the performance might not be optimal. Not always. You can in some instances. It is supposed to work, but in reality it is fairly hit or miss from what I have seen. As long as you keep it to the s...

Re: Intel Xeon E5-2680 and GIGABYTE X79S-UP5 Server Level Re
Decent review, but one thing that really annoys me: XEON DOES NOT MEAN SERVER. I read "Server Level Review" in the title and assumed something completely different. This is nothing more then a desktop using a Xeon cpu (which unless you actually are running more than 1 cpu in a workstation ...

Re: Use Two Separate Wireless Routers?
Unless you are massively re-configuring your old router to work only as an access point (no DHCP, no NAT, etc), do yourself a favor and dont use it if you get a new N router. Troubleshooting issues that are caused by double NAT is a nightmare. If you really want to use the G router you can flash the...

Re: XP SP3 Issue
Not really enough info, do any exe files actually run? Try pulling up a command prompt and see if you can start something. Most likely it is malware, however I have run into (more than once) malware that breaks the ability to run exe and other files. You have to re-create registry entries to be able...

Re: Windows Server Tablet (2012)
Yeah, the UI is absolutely horrific for a server. The high availability DHCP server though is quite simple to set up which is pretty big for a lot of companies that I work for. Not having to deal with MSCS or split scopes is really useful.

Anyone else had the displeasure of dealing with 2012 yet? Curious if the general hatred/annoyance for the UI is just me or not.

Re: Synology NAS
I am going to avoid being too technical here to avoid writing a wall of text. Desktop SATA drives in RAID typically have issues as you describe. The reason has to do with recovering bad sectors and timeouts. Basically the desktop sata drive will almost hang when trying to recover from a bad sector a...

Re: Mobo advice
Why not get a board more suited to your other needs and get a proper RAID controller? Onboard RAID is not what you are looking for, dont try to force it to be something it isnt. Edit: Really not sure this will even give you the performance you need/want either. But since there isnt a ton of info abo...

Re: Question about page filing
what i don't understand is if you are using gobs of memory already then why would you need a page file that is equal to or greater then the memory you have installed. isn't the idea of using more memory is to take that type of stuff off of the storage device so it can work faster? SO far it appears...
