Re: Comparison Help
I use my computer a lot, but I don't do any video editing or gaming. Mostly just firefox/outlook/word, occasionally photoshop. Seriously if that's all you use your laptop for, then your current Dell is more than adequate. Why spend the money if you don't really need to? If anything, just optimize y...

Re: giga-byte GA-945GCM-S2L mobo
I honestly can't say that it's 50% quieter, but only because I have not had the loudness issue with Intel stock fans as others report. One of my Intel 775 PC's has a stock cooler and the other has the Arctic. The one with the Arctic cools much better, but I can barely notice a difference in loudness...

I have an Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro. It is an awesome cooler, but it's very large and it's not exactly quiet either.

If you can't remember the password and you don't want to be troubled with finding a way to change or reset it, you can always format and reinstall the OS. Gateways have an OEM Windows COA so the reinstall will be 100% legit for validation.

Re: New PC Build & Win 7
Well said...all you can do at that point is cross your fingers and hope none of your parts are DOA! What I normally do: 1 - make sure the ram is in the proper slots, especially if you have more than 1 stick and you want it to run in dual channel. If you don't have a stick in the first slot, it won't...

The only thing worse than a permanent problem is an intermittent one. Those are even more maddening. Maybe you got lucky and it just worked itself out.

Re: Xeon X3450 compatibility question
Welcome!
From what I'm hearing, most, if not all p55 boards work fine with these LGA1156 Xeon chips, yet are not "officially" supported as they are specifically designed for Core i5 and i7 cpus.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong or has any personal experience.

Re: New PC Build & Win 7
I think you're very smart to work with what you have. Most people can't avoid the temptation of keeping up with the Jones' and I applaud you for doing just that! I have a gaming build almost identical to what you have there and it kicks major butt. There's still not a single game on the market that ...

What bmaverick said is absolutely textbook. Revert it back to its original state (last known good configuration), and go from there. Also great advice to look for accidental grounding.

I was really hoping this would go through for Intel. Actually it would be good news for all as that would increase competition in the video card market and thus lower prices. Bummer!

In my opinion, you should probably avoid Nvidia boards, or any boards with nvidia chipsets as they don't overclock as well. I would look into Gigabyte or Asus boards with Intel chipsets. Hopefully that will get you started and someone else can help you hone in a bit better.

Re: System Processes!
Ya, most of what is in startup in completely unnecessary, and a lot of what is in services (non-ms) is equally unnecessary.
If you check a newly formatted XP PC, there will be no items in startup and few if any non-ms items in services. They are all added by third party programs.
