Installing drivers for monitors on XP won't do anything. It will just take out resolutions that your monitor can't display from the selection menu. I would go with the X1950Pro. On newegg it is $170, $150 after rebate.

X1950GT is $150, $140 after rebate. When the price difference is this low might as well go for the X1950Pro.

MSI boards usually aren't the best overclockers. Although I don't know how overclockable a quad core is.

You could try replacing the thermal paste.

I personally wouldn't try it because you gotta squeeze those stupid little pins on the back of the board, and there have been cases where I couldn't get them off.
