Re: Color Laser Printers - Educate Me.

First off a bit of a rant, HP support for older products under new OSs SUX (IMHO)! I had a perfectly working HP PSC 2175 All In One. A month after Win XP 64bit released I contacted HP and was told that "HP doesn't support Operating Systems that have not been released yet" or some such thin...

Re: Building a Workstation

I have to agree with Apop. Reliability in motherboards (at least from the biggies) has gone way up recently. I have had great luck with Gigabyte, EVGA has an excellent warranty and support as does XFX (but they are limited to Nforce). Since gaming and overclocking are out and CPU isn't the issue I w...

5850 or 5870?

I won't bother asking if either of these cards will be faster than my existing 4870 512M at 1920x1200 as I know the answer to that. 8) My situation is: - Don't multi-GPU so no Xfire required - I'm not a hard core gamer but I do game and like a good IQ and framerate experience when I do. - I like qui...

Re: No budget multimedia/gaming rig build.

Agree 100% with Major_A on both counts. The Velociraptor is fast I'll give you but IMHO too noisy, hot, and pricey. Two of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319&cm_re=caviar_black-_-22-136-319-_-Product will run you half the cost for about 90% of the performance ...

Well if I get the 5870 and he gets my old 4870 then he will get a nice Deluxe car wash kit (I'll let him try it out on my GTO  ). I'm already shopping for it :)

Re: Can you recommend a good keyboard

Personally I have to agree with HONkUS, the old IBM keyboards were the best IMHO, but progress moves on and schtuff :( I had a G-15 and its a good keyboard but I did have some issues: 1) I played with the LCD a bit but it never really sank in. 2) I played with the macro keys but never used them. 3) ...

Re: No budget multimedia/gaming rig build.

If you look at the math and shop a bit more you could probably get 8GB of RAM in the 860 rig for about the same price as the 920 build. While I have a 920 rig, were I building again I would go the P55/860 path. The reasons for my decision would match yours as well methinks: 1) Don't X-Fire or SLI, s...

Re: No budget multimedia/gaming rig build.

This all looks good (although I agree to up the PSU a bit). From the optionals list I would pick: 1. The i7 860, it's not a lot more and HT might help out. 2. The 5870 (I've seen them at the Egg for $379). This is probably more subjective but you may want to look at Eyefinity in the future and the e...

Re: New office PC

I don't have all the network info right now. They paid someone to set it all up and I think no one really knows what they paid for nor what they got for their money.. Sorry Merlin but this is the (way too common) worst case scenario for a small office/business (somebody knew a friend of a friend wh...

Re: 1 Week Old 2009 Dodge Ram Gets True Flames

I too am a ghost flames type. IMHO, unless you are driving a Lightning or an SRT-10 flames on a truck are a bit tacky (former Lightning owner, drive an 06 GTO, or rebadged Holden Monaro, now). I don't know, call me old school but a truck is meant to be a truck (e.g. when you blow up the motor in you...

Liked the intro, bookmarked and will DEFINITELY read. Having been recently diagnosed with type 2 I am still in the "denial" phase, hopefully this will wake me up. While I can still easily feel my son's Lego block in the middle of the night while I step on it going to the bathroom in the da...

Re: *POLL* GT300 or 5870?

This Engadget article quote from th OP links speaks volumes to me, "Beyond this, the technobabble runs deep, but the long and short of it is this: NVIDIA could be right on the cusp of delivering a single chip that can handle tasks that were typically separated for the CPU and GPU, and we needn'...

My boss has asked me if I could put together a good solid PC to run a small 4 PC network off of. What would you guys recommend for an application like this? The office is for a small construction company so the main use is Quickbooks and Peachtree along with general e-mail and document generation f...

Re: will you call me a poser if i dont OC?

Definitely not posing. Posing would be "Look at my new rig I built from scratch!" and linking to the Dell XPS summary page where you upped the RAM and ordered a printer [-X Enthusiasts come in many flavors. I have a mate at work that is numbers driven, if we were to both build a system tod...

Re: Windows 7 upgrading

If you actually upgraded from Vista, wouldn't it be buggy as heck ? It's a pain to reinstall everything, but I'm almost sure all my programs will somehow be unstable and corrupt if I did upgrade. Maybe Yes, maybe No (the problem is with the maybes :) ) I'll preface my next statement with "YMMV...

Re: Windows 7 upgrading

I upgraded in place my Vista Ultimate 64 to 7 Ultimate 64 with no problem. To be honest I liked Vista for the most part but when I did the Win7 pre-order I ordered Pro vs. Ultimate. While I won't be able to do an in place upgrade I still have that "bad taste" from the Vista Ultimate "...

Re: Need some opinions!

Not much of an AMD type but it does look like a pretty good deal. The mobo seems to have some good upgradeability and, while the RAM is a bit of overkill, you wouldn't save a lot and he will be ready when he can get a 64-bit OS.
