Single wire WLAN module?
Just picked up an HP 2000-2b80DX minus the LCD for a song on eBay. When tearing it down I noticed that the WLAN module has only the black wire. There's what looks like a ground strap underneath the card on what would ordinarily be the #2/white connector. Anyway, I thought the white wire might not ha...

DVD software that allows complete custom menus
Can anyone recommend a decent DVD authoring program, free or paid, that allows for completely custom menus? I'm working on a family project that is set up with episodes featuring different family members. As it stands right now, there'll be 5 titles. The closest app I've found that allows complete f...

Win 7 is bogging down
I'm not sure exactly what's going on. About 3 months ago I did a fresh install of Win 7 to get rid of some lingering remnants of a toolbar/malware problem my better half inadvertently installed which nothing would remove completely. Over about the last month, my machine has progressively gotten slow...

Re: Looking for a new AIO Printer
Thanks! I'll take a look. I know lasers have dropped in price but don't know how it'll work for me right now.
Nice to "see" another cigar connoisseur! I've used Stogie411 to research sticks I haven't tried & I've come to trust the info, so Thanks for that, too!

Looking for a new AIO Printer
My 5 year old OfficeJet 6310 bit the dust a while back but have been getting by with a little DeskJet 1000. More & more lately I find myself needing a real scanner (rather than an app on my phone), much better print quality although not for printing photos so much as for projects like shooting o...

Re: The old "What ____ should I buy" question
I hear you. I just so seldom get a chance to really follow the trends & developments in hardware. It's been 5 years since my last build for myself. I'm sure by the time I get to actually buy my parts I will have changed my mind a half dozen times. I value everyone's opinions & input here. Y'...

Re: The old "What ____ should I buy" question
Thanks. I realized also I kinda put my foot in my mouth when I didn't include any kind of budget for my build. I'm thinking along the lines of ~$7-800 for the fundamentals: Board & CPU, memory, cooling & PSU. If I have any left over all the better. I think my current case should be ok...

Re: The old "What ____ should I buy" question
Thanks. Want to go, as I said, not necessarily something absolutely brand new on the market but something higher end that's proven. Just wanted a pointer in the right direction.
Thanks again

The old "What ____ should I buy" question
I'm looking probably 6 months or so down the road so this isn't an urgent issue but I'm starting to think about a new build. I'm not a gamer....Just don't have time.....but the main work tasks I'll be doing will be working with video and audio. With the village site I'm doing more & more video i...

Re: Unable to create new folders Win 7 SP1
Thanks, Ken. Both my brothers were diagnosed with cancer less than 30 days apart. I lost my oldest brother 6 months after his initial diagnosis. He had a tumor in his esophagus but it quickly spread to his liver & that was it. I've been down here about a week but this morning was when it really ...

Re: Unable to create new folders Win 7 SP1
Me too. It's my brother's computer. He's not very tech savvy plus he's been fighting colon cancer for 3 years. Everyone's astonished he's still alive. He's very weak so trying even to fix a minor glitch is too much for him. This is the first time I've seen him in over 18 months. I was shocked at how...

Re: Unable to create new folders Win 7 SP1
Thanks! Should've known it would be something obscurely simple!! Apparently at least one of the scripts worked. I had tried creating a folder in Safe Mode but it didn't work there either. Nor did it work after running the script, shutting down the PC afterward then rebooting it the first time...

Unable to create new folders Win 7 SP1
Here I am in South Texas, about the same distance from Mexico as I am from Canada at home. I'm using my brother's HP p6214y to rip a couple of his CDs to my phone when I discovered I can't make a new folder. Anywhere. I found a couple of scripts that allegedly create the necessary entries in the Reg...

Thanks everyone! It's one day at a time and, so far, every day has been a little better. The next hurdle is to be able to take my trip to visit my brother & Mom

Re: Building a PC? The eyes have it
Turns out my retina was not detached, thank God, but the vessels were leaking pretty darn good. Surgery went well & I'm slowly regaining my vision. First couple of days I had to sit with my eyes closed because the scars gave me the sensation of something perpetually in my eye. Closing the one ey...

Re: Building a PC? The eyes have it
Yeah, it's not a gradual thing at all. 2 weeks ago everything was just fine. Then I started seeing small floaters. I had been to the optometrist & he said I'll "eventually" have to have surgery to repair the leaky blood vessel(s). Then, right when everything came in for these two build...

Building a PC? The eyes have it
You just can't take'em for granted. There is nothing on earth more exciting than trying to connect the headers on a motherboard to the case when your right eye has a moving gray spot right in the middle of what you're looking at and your left eye suddenly has a detached retina. If you want to know w...

Re: How to reset an iMac
For once luck is on my side. On a hunch I stopped by Village Hall & there, in the safe, was a box the size of a keyboard with "DO NOT TOUCH!!!" written on it. Opened it up & there sat a packet with the 2 install discs for OS X. Now if I can just find a box to ship the cursed thing ...

How to reset an iMac
Hopefully some of y'all are more versed in OSX than I. I need to reset an iMac 8,1 to factory so I can ship it out to the buyer. I found a site that said to do this I need to restart and "by the time the gray screen appears" press Command + R then release them when I see the Apple logo. Th...
