What are you recommending card wise? I know I'm hung up on this 3Ware card and I really shouldn't be.

Re: Enterprise Servers - Stepping up to the big boys

$1,600 is double, and almost tripple what I can get a used Operton/Xeon based server for, so it get into a question of budget at that point. Maybe I'll just stick with what I have and try to find a rack mount case. I was wanting to do this the best way possible while keeping it fairly "future p...

Enterprise Servers - Stepping up to the big boys

I take your point. So far nothing about this project has received one positive word, either in the media server side or on the home automation side I'm discussing on another forum. There seems to be no middle ground between overkill and cheap. Maybe I'm not asking the right questions or maybe I'm ju...

Enterprise Servers - Stepping up to the big boys

My problem is that most 2-3U NAS appliances cost more than a used server. This will be going on a AV equipment rack. I suppose I can just shove a shelf in there or get a 4U case to transfer my equipment into and shove it in here. Right now I have 3 WD 1TB Green SATA drives in a RAID5 array. I know i...

Enterprise Servers - Stepping up to the big boys

Well, I can possibly do the ripping on my desktop. I considered having an "all in one" solution the ideal. What kind of NAS did you have in mind? I was under the impression most NAS devices were little more than glorified external hard drives with an occasional managed user interface.

Enterprise Servers - Stepping up to the big boys

Ok, I need some advice and this has been the best place I've found for such. Right now I have a Core2Duo E6600 based server running Windows Vista. This drives a 3Ware 8 Port PCIX SATA RAID card. I've never been able to get my hands on a PCIX board to really take advantage of the card and honestly, I...

Re: Drive Cloning Software (Revisited)

I use Clonzilla, I have it on an old SD card and boot from that. I save my images to a NAS on the network. I don't keep many files on my main laptop, keeping most on the NAS so backups contain just the OS and installed apps. Once every ~3mths I create a new image. The image size for me is ~6GB as I...

Drive Cloning Software (Revisited)

Hey gang! I need some help here. I need to Ghost/Clone a hard drive in my moms PC. It's currently on a 40G IDE drive and I'm going to move it to one of my spare 600GB IDE drives. It's running XP and is about an 8 year old Sony. I don't think I'd find the drivers again if I had to resinstall everythi...

Wow!! That's crazy! I guess the bubbles are from where there wasn't enough of the compound on the proc at the time. Looks like it pulled the ink right of the processor die!

Re: WD Reducing Warranties on Some Hard Drive Series

The line about "we are unable to go into specifics" kinda tweeks me. It just says to me, as someone steeped in the corporate enviroment, that it increases profits. I don't know how many hard drives they actually get in RMA. I'd be interested to see some specifics.

Re: Thermal Grease

To be honest, most are within 2-3 degrees of each other which is trivial unless your are hardcore OC'ing. I'd be more concerned with application technique than the brand (obviously some brands are duds though). Technique you say? I've looked at several YouTube videos. The concensus I could find see...

Re: Thermal Grease

Well that doesn't sound good at all! I think I'll avoid that. Anything that makes a snapping sound causes me some "concern".

The Gelid GC Extreme is only $10 so I'll probably order that along with the 1155 bracket for my waterblock. Still debating on swapping it out.

Thermal Grease

What's the latest word on thermal grease? What are people using and what do they like? Is Artic Silver still considered good stuff or are there better alternatives. I've been using the eVGA Frostbite stuff that came with my motherboard but wonder if it's really as good as they claim. I'm going to be...

Re: Warmachine 3.0 Build

I'm going to let it sit for a day or so and see what happens. I'm beginning to suspect it's actually the mounting bracket. :( http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7167/6450550957_46163ccc4c_b.jpg Notice how it's kind of cocked 10 deg to the clockwise? That's because of how eVGA put the mounting holes for t...

Re: Warmachine 3.0 Build

I took the block off, used a grain of rice sized dab of eVGA Frostbite, and reseated it. Reran Prime95 and monitored temps with HWiNFO64. Still hitting 47C at stock clocks.

I still can't help but feel there's something wrong.

Re: Warmachine 3.0 Build

Sounds like bad contact. You try pulling the block off and seeing how the thermal paste spread out? No, but I'm going to this afternoon. The block I'm using doesn't have spring standoffs either, just fixed blots. I was a little nervous about how hard to torque them down using the aftermarket rear b...

Re: Warmachine 3.0 Build

Wow, seriously? Now I'm worried. :(

***EDIT***

I fear you may be right. Adjusting the speeds of the fans on the waterblock made zero difference in the temperatures. I wonder what I've done wrong. :-k

Re: Warmachine 3.0 Build

Just started and already into some problems. Using eVGA's ELEET tool I can OC it to 4Ghz super easy. Running Prime95 I'm pulling 57C at peak temps. The problem is I can't seem to get it to stay there. Once I turn Prime95 off it drops right back down to 3.2 which I assume is the speed stepping techno...

Re: Warmachine 3.0 Build

Well, here's the start of my overclocking. I wanted to get an idea of what my baseline temps were like before I began cranking things up. I ran Prime95 for 10 iterations achieving a max core temp of 47C as per HWiNFO64. I'm going to jump straight to 4.2G and see how it handles that. http://farm8.sta...
