Re: UBER-CHEAP PC for Mom
Don't know much about psus. I can't comment on it, except the fact that it looks cheap. But again lot of psu used in BTO systems are usually like that, i mean if the computer is not in heavy constant use it should be fine Plus alot of reviews are good on newegg, just note that some say it is a loud ...

Re: UBER-CHEAP PC for Mom
Well in general the system doesnt need alot ot power, but most pentium d's are kinda powerhungry. You could find cheap psu's up to 450 (and again branded). 450 would be overkill but 400 is more than enough and safe. Checking now on a psu calculator, d830 has a max tdp of 130watts. Try cpu util. 85% ...

Re: XP sp2 dvd-r reading problem
You can try the dvd drive on another computer or Try the dvd drive on another OS or Download a linux live cd try to load the dvd's from there. If they dont work anywhere then chances are your dvds are toast or that the drive has a problem. If other OSes/installations/computers with the same drive ca...

Re: My system specs, what do you think?
I tried crysis with 8600gts. With medium graphics it was very playable and the graphics seemed very nice.
BUT i'm not a graphics freak, i mean i dont mind if its on low medium or high. I usually play older games anyway
If you are a gamer 8600gts is not a good deal in my opinion

XP sp2 dvd-r reading problem
Well this is silly, but there seems to be some problem with XP sp2 after trying to read a "bad disk" For some reason the drive will see dvd-rs now as 0byte cd (dvd+r works fine)! I researched a bit and its happening to lots of people no matter what drive they use. Even ISObuster seems to b...

Re: Gaming in XP/Vista/32/64
Crysis is hardly dx10. You can enable the very high settings in XP too! You just need to mess with a conf file. It just uses a small part of dx10 and the difference between very high @ vista and very high @XP is not not easily visible (at least thats what i have read around) But i agree, if you are ...

Re: Intel E6850 overclocking help
Please be sure to check the temperatures first! when idle the multiplier should be 6 not 9, but if on benching one core reports 3G and the other 3.6 then maybe one core is throttling back? Anyway, you should disable speedstep (EIST) and C1E. When checking the temperatures do so with the lasest versi...

Re: My move from Windows to Linux/using big monitors
Open source distros aren't for the lazy, for that you need windows. But thats exactly what linux needs to become more popular! Some distros for the lazy (and people that just want to have fun-do their work with minimal effort). I was amazed at the progress done there after trying the lateat ubuntu ...

Re: GRUB strikes again
Fixmbr and fixboot, as said should do. But i got a question, if the mbr was written on the external drive this would mean that the mbr on the internal drive is still intact, so by removing the external drive, or at worst resetting the internal drive's xp partition to active via a partition manager s...

Re: SpeedFan / D975XBX / +2.5 V
Well, at least for me, speedfan is prone to showing wrong voltages! Some correct some wrong, but generally i just dont trust it there
(yup 12V is -16V for my speedfan... but memory V seems correct on my system)

Re: Apple to force dual booters to upgrade os?
you can stick with Tiger and run the Beta. On the other hand, maybe Apple should not have released it as a Beta at all, and just waited for the new OS to release, but then we would not have anything to complain about. Once again, this has been known for a while, so there is no justification to cry ...

Did you remove the jumper from the Seagate drive? Mine, by default, came with the jumper in Sata 1 compatibility mode! You have to remove it!

Re: Another boring request for advice...
Exactly, most good intel gigabyte boards come with esata bracket. 2x esata + power connection. Which means you can connect externally even a bare drive without a powered case. In the ones with non raid intel southbridge you have to connect it to the gigabyte sata 2 (jmicron) controller, because this...

Re: Swapping mainboard under Vista with Matrix RAID was easy
Nice!!
Seems vista do some things as they are supposed to be done! I hope they iron out the glitches and the performance issues and it will be a great os to work on!
But seriously, since you didnt have any problems with the RAID well all is good even if vista failed to fix the system!

Re: What you actually need for an HTPC
If you need HD then a simple dual core (won't need alot of horsepower here, a small dual core will be able to handle hd) but try a low wattage one, like an amd energy efficient or a core 2 2xxx (and undervolted) since you will want the system to be quiet! Again if you need HD, and have an HD tv then...
