Re: XP or Vista?
With the speed of your new system Vista Ultimate 64 will be fine. I haven't had any issues with the last batch of 64-bit Creative drivers (driver only install) and the only game I have any performance issues with is Hellgate London and I am pretty sure that's the game itself and not Vista. If you ar...

Re: quad or dual?!
I wouldn't go get an E8400 since you already have an E6850 unless you have money to burn. You are better off making a big leap with a quadcore instead of just a small hop with another dualcore; thats how I would do it. Thats why the "no justification to upgrade now" comment came from. Had...

Re: quad or dual?!
Screw the 680i and go with a nice P35 like Abit's IP35-Pro along with the ever so sweet E8400. You won't be disappointed with that combo. Must admit I agree on both counts :supz: I've only recently been looking at the 8400 and kinda' wish I'd waited a bit, no justification for upgrading now though :(

Re: quad or dual?!
I was faced with the same choice when doing my Xmas build (but the 45nm chips were farther out). I could have upgraded my E6600 to a Q6600 but by all accounts would not have seen any performance increase in games. For the same price as the Q6600 I picked up an E6850 which did give me an increase in ...

Also are you using a PC monitor and do you have it plugged into the DVI port using either direct DVI or the DVI - VGA adapter?

Re: D975XBX2 - SATA drive problems
Hi, I think Intel recomends AHCI, but it need to be done before install anything on hard disk. Using AHCI you can use a normal or RAID configuration. There is a good document that explain this configuration, need to find it at Intel's website. Good luck, MBL. It's the other way around, if you enabl...

Re: D975XBX2 - SATA drive problems
You're right about the S.M.A.R.T message "drive may fail soon". I tried installing the drivers but I don't think I had the right ones. Anyway, Vista sat there for about 10 min trying to extract the files - stayed at 0%. So, I decided to take the drive out and take it to my work computer. ...

Re: D975XBX2 - SATA drive problems
I have another quick question. Do I need to install any of the Raid drivers (Marvell or Intel)? If so, how and when would I do this. Thanks! pc You can select "optimal settings" in BIOS to reset everything. The term you're searching for is "AHCI" My recommendation would be to se...

Re: WHICH MOTHERBOARD SHOULD I GO FOR???
I agree that you should look at a CPU + Mobo + RAM upgrade if you can swing it. Finding a socket 478 motherboard might be tough these days. Newegg has one mATX board with a VIA chipset but case fit might be an issue and you would have to pickup some DDR2. Also stability might be spotty and, in my ex...

Re: best overclocking motherboard????
On my Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 I'm running the 6850 @ 3.4g. 3.4g isn't a super OC by any means but to qualify: 1) I am running the stock Intel cooler (did add some AS vs. the Intel tape) 2) I haven't changed any voltages except boosting the G.Skill to 2.0v (it likes 2.1 - 2.2v) I think if I really starte...

Re: Best $300 card around?
thats what i was thinking - i see those cards going for $300 easy on ebay.. Yeah but by the time I got around to it the supply would be back up what I would make isn't worth the hastle. The Egg is maintaining some stock now and now that the 256mb parts are hitting the shelves ($209 at the Egg) it's...

Re: Best $300 card around?
In building a new system I ordered the MSI 8800 GT (660/1900) overclocked from the Egg for 299.00. As soon as I placed the order I popped back over to my wish list and the card showed as out of stock (these things are flying off the shelf). Then I saw a link at the OCP for Dell selling the same card...

Re: non-technical Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 impressions
1) The "Easytune5" app seems to have a couple of issues. It asks for UAC approval on startup after a reboot and frequently fails to start. I removed it and will use Speedfan to monitor temps. software overclocking is for the weak! Use the BIOS and you'll find better results I promise. He!...

non-technical Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 impressions
OK, to qualify this, while I have built almost all of my own PCs (from the 8088 days) I am not an uber overclocker or gearhead. This post then will just be from the perspective of a general users opinion of the build and some gotchas encountered. Decided to build a new system and give my old stuff t...

Apop, Yes all drivers including chipset are installed... dkarko, no I didn't I think I'll go do that now... #-o Thanks! The graphics card issue was the really weird one however. 3Dmark 06 runs were in the 11s AERO worked fine and the Nvidia control panel was all setup correctly so Vista was seeing t...

Another boring request for advice...
I know everyone is tired of reading the "what should I buy?" threads but what the heck... I built a new system last Xmas but want to build/upgrade this year. Since I'm buying a new Mobo I figured that X38 would be the way to go, mainly for the immediate PCI-E 2.0 compatibility and the futu...

Re: Wondering if an upgrade is worth it...
Depends what you use the computer for, but you probably won't notice any difference in performance going from E to Q6600. The motherboard has very little to do with performance, but if money isn't a problem then go for the Maximus, otherwise there are alot of very nice P35 boards available. I use i...
