Re: i7 920 overclock guesses
Gonna be fun learning the platform, also just ordered a Dominator CL9 2000MHz 3x4GB Kit with fan. high-end triple channel kits are few an far between these days so I figured I should get them while they exist! should just arrive a day or two after my Board and CPU. remembered to use the LR shop-thro...

LGA1366 Overclock Log
So I am finally getting an i7 (to arrive late this week), granted it may be old now but 8 threads of intel power for $80 shipped (OCN) is too tempting to bear :) So it'll be a 920 D0 chip, and in an EVGA X58 Tri-SLI i'm picking up at the same time, with 2133MHz (Dual Channel :/) CL9 Ripjaws until I ...

Re: Intel Chipset Device Software Aggravations
my assumption would be that they are not officially signed by microsoft yet (WHQL) so the 9.1.9 may be the most recent WHQL but of course as long as the drivers work I don't usually update anything but the OS after the initial OS install... (Would waste too much of my time, having 5 computers that I...

Re: Zotac GTX 570 thermal pads!
Generally if it doesnt come with them it doesnt need them (65c is warm but they are designed for much hotter) keep in mind they are designed to run without overheating at load in ultra stuffy or dusty smoker's cases without touching the thermal compound, I've never worried about them on any card i'v...

Re: ThinkPad predicament
make a bootable USB drive or even easier is to have an external DVD burner, they are pretty cheap and come in handy, these days with the surge of ultrabooks at mid level pricing is a good idea, as ultra books don't have optical drives either

Re: SATA-to-USB adapters
well, depending if you actually need IDE (I dont have a single IDE drive anymore, except for a Pentium III machine), I'd just get a straight up SATA-to-USB 3.0 Adapter <-The one I have as far as internal drives on any USB3.0 adapter, most of the time the write/read speeds are around 90MB/s on large ...

I use classic Shell on my Work laptop, I wouldn't have Windows 8 if it didn't have a start menu

Re: Random BSOD's
even when playing Crysis 3, Battlefield 3 and Planetside 2 the most cpu hungry games to date it runs fine. however, i am testing for higher stable clock with max vcore right now  cant speak of Planetside (as I've never heard of it) but Crysis has always been GPU-centric, with Battlefield right...

Re: SATA-to-USB adapters
not sure how you've made out, but Linux liveCD's have always worked for me for finding files (or deleting in this case), but I would Run combofix (Combofix can go a little crazy sometimes, but if combofix cant find or remove a virus it either isnt a virus or it cannot be removed. also, run ATF Clean...

well, are you trying to load a Windows 7 hard drive externally from an internal drive install to pull data off the external drive?

Re: My E8500 vs Q6600
I still think going socket 775 is a dead end. You don't have SATA III or USB 3.0 and if at all very limited UEFI. TBH SATA III wouldn't really be a deal breaker unless he has a large capacity new SSD(Which he only has spindle drives right now..), USB3 isn't really either but he could get a USB3 con...

Re: My E8500 vs Q6600
I think you would still be better served with a Core2Quad, even a Q6600. I got my Q8400 for $140 retail, and with my Memory at 950MHz, Bus at 475MHz (3.8GHz) it is probably better than your E8500 at 3.8 in single thread games/apps, and significantly better in multi-threaded. And with your graphics p...

Knight is correct, it is pretty much only for if you are running a virtual machine (virtual box, vmware etc.) if you don't plan to have a VM I would just leave it off (Myself I have 4 different virtual OS's on my work laptop to stay familiar with them; at Help Desk)

Re: Sooooo...What router are you using?
Yeah, that's the weird thing about that Rosewill--the wireless radios were awesome and gave me great coverage albeit better in the 2.4Ghz than the 5Ghz. well, the lower the frequency band the greater the distance it can travel, 5GHz range gives much higher bandwidth for a much shorter distance than...

Classy system you have there now :) Good to know about plasticiser! I plan to watercool my next system in similar epic fashion I would be kind of scared not to replace the rad myself though! though I suppose letting it sit in vinegar for a while or at least flushing with vinegar would have taken car...

Re: Random BSOD's
if it really is an overclock problem, run prime95 blend test for an hour, you'd get a blue screen right quick if it was, and furmark full screen highest settings, no AA to see if it has anything to do with graphics/GPU drivers I would do both of the above on the overclocks you had been running up un...

Re: Sooooo...What router are you using?
several months ago I upgraded from a Chinese brand router (Netis) to a TP Link WDR3600, its manufacturer firmware would drop wireless daily when using it as DHCP/DNS (Which is what most users would do!) but I upgraded it to DDWRT and now usually can keep it up for about 6-8 weeks at a time before it...

if it boots windows you should be good to go!
most of the time between changing over motherboards windows will not get very far into booting and cycle repeatedly
