Corrupted File?

Post by top »

I was doing my usual weekly system maintenance(XP) and I came across a file that sucks up my cpu cycles when I try to access it in Explorer or try to check the file for viruses. It does this even when I attempt to click on the file to view it's properties. The system is literally stuck trying to access this file until I shutdown windows and even doing that takes forever (since my CPU usage is always at 100%).

The disk needed to be defragged so I thought the resource hogging file could of been fragmented. I went ahead and ran scandisk and then defragged the hard drive, came back to the file afterwards and it still does the same thing. I tried to specify the file in the command console and I was able to see it's directory properties. I was also able to view the properties in Explorer via Safe Mode... so it sounds like there's something going on in Normal Windows, but what?

I've been thinking about just deleting the file. The file is not necessary for Windows to run or is a file to make other programs run and the file can easily be replaced. It's just that I don't know why one single file would do this to my system's CPU cycles.

What do you guys think?

What is the file? Something you've made, or something you don't recognise?

The filename is SUPERCYCLE_JET.LTB. It's a model file that was extracted from a REZ package from the game TRON 2.0. The file can be used with the game tools although I have never worked on or used it in the tools before.

Erm, well i guess it could well be corrupted.

If you don't need the file (and I would have thought you can extract the model again sometime) then you may as well delete it.

I turned off my Security Suite and I was able to access the file like I did in Safe Mode... The strange thing that happened was when I turned the Suite back on I was still able to access the file... Something ain't right here!

Does it still do it when you reboot, leave the suite on and access the file? Or does it seem to have fixed itself now?

It seems to have fixed itself.

With ZoneAlarm ISS, you have to boot into safe mode and disable one of the software's services and then another program thing in msconfig to fully turn it off. During normal operation you can't turn off the service for some reason, I guess for security reasons: "Access Denied" is what I get. So I had to go into safe made to turn it off(Disabled) and then again to Safe Mode to turn it back on(Automatic). I dunno I just find it weird how it fixed itself.

Why am I not surprised that Zone Alarm is involved. There are several known issues involving Zone Alarm and process that use 100% cpu usage.

I recommend you find an alternative. Just my 2cents.

Well this is the first time I've ever had a problem like this with ZoneAlarm and I've been using it for about 2 to 3 1/2 years. I like ZoneAlarm for it's security features.. AV is above average, but probably not the best. But then I really like the firewall and program protection it provides.

They do software updates periodically and each version seems to have significant improvements. The disk fragmentation was huge so I'm guessing that didn't help either.
