iTouch?

Post by Tim Burton »

My first gen Nano died.

I was wonder, which should I get?

I like the iPhone, but I don't want a contract and $700 is just out of my price range.

I could drop $340 on a 32GB iTouch and a guy is willing to see his used to me for that or I could drop $130 on a refurbbed 8GB Nano. What do you guys suggest? Is the iTouch worth it?

I have an iPhone and the only reason I got it is because that's one less device to carry (works as a decent capacity mp3 player and cellphone) and I could browse the internet pretty much anywhere with it. The iPod Touch, I'd say would only be worth it if either 1) you want the bigger screen for watching videos or 2) you can get wifi easily and pretty much browse the internet anywhere. Otherwise, if all you really want is an mp3 player, I'd go for the Nano.

Not sure what's wrong with your Nano but if it's just corrupt firmware (happens with a lot of small devices) you could try either finding the official firmware or, if it's a 1st gen, the Rockbox firmware and it may spring back to life. Worth a shot if you're just going to throw it out.

Can you flash the firm where with Rockbox and not lose the songs on it?

Also, can anyone suggest a way to take all the songs off the iPod and put them on the HD? They were all put on with anapod.

The problem is that everytime I press the click wheel, the lock symbol (as if the hold switch is on) comes on. I no longer can change songs.

I'd like a browser I can use without having to worry about dragging a laptop around. It'd be nice for checking for movies and stuff.

I don't really care much about video, but I'm sure I can put a few videos I would be willing to upload.

So maybe the Nano is the better choice.

I doubt it. Also if you have a lot of DRM music then either the official firmware or a new iPod would be best. Rockbox is great though as it's opensource, plays many formats and has other cool stuff (like DOOM).

On a side note, if the iPod is still in good shape (not abused too severely) and you don't want to deal with messing around with the firmware, I'll gladly take it off your hands for a reasonable price...
