Linux Ubuntu sound error

I have gotten bored and decided to install ubuntu onto a spare drive. Now i have done this everything so far has been pretty easy going, now this is the first real annoyance i have had.

When i log in it plays the sound but, once logged in i try to play some music and it just doesnt play or make a sound, i hit play and it just sits on 00:00 out of what ever.

Any ideas?

I had a quick look in good but nothing seems similar.

i am running 8.04 (hardy)

open a terminal and type sudo apt-get install w32codecs. Probably don't have the MP3 Codec installed

i had already gotten the neccesary codecs, because it had been working already! hmm after serveral restarts it seems to have fixed itself.
