I'm not really game for reformatting again (twice in about a month) after finally getting the thing to where I want it. :x

I was thinking of burning all the stuff on one of my portable drives, reformatting it, and installing Windows on it if I can. I know I can boot off of my USB, but I'm uncertain how I can reformat a USB drive and install XP on it. I really don't have room on my drive to make another install of XP, so that's where the portable comes in. My OS partition has ~3GB free on it, and my games/music partition has ~10GB free. Notebook HDD's FTW!

I'll defrag, but there hasn't been a bunch of stuff downloaded/deleted yet, so it shouldn't be horrible, but what am I to say? :?

I wanted to throw up the blue screen that I keep getting on boot or at random times while using and not using the computer. Sorry for the crappy picture and only being most of the screen, yay for cell phones. It should give you an idea of what it is saying as only a few irrelevant words are cut off.

I'm ready to reformat this machine and bitch to Dell on Friday, but just wanted to know if anyone had ideas on what the "technical information" says.

The IRQL message means something tried to access the IRQ stack at a higher level then it was supposed to.

I believe the codes given indicate a read error (not sure I'm reading them correctly/too hard to see in the pic)

while IRQL's usually indicate a software/driver problem, non compliant hardware or even compliant hardware pushed to hard (or failing) can cause it.
one known factor is USB/external drives
When you reformat Start with just windows and the baseline driver(only whats needed) plus a test program and run it hard for a few hours/overnight,If it does BSOD, it's a Dell problem, if no BSoD (or other odd behavior) add the USB drives and test again, etc.

My USB drives aren't plugged in most of the time, and they definitely weren't when my last BSoD occured. The only USB devices I have are an Intellimouse and my Logitech wireless thing. Have owned the mouse for 8+ years and the wireless thing for 3, haven't had a problem with either on any of my computers.

I'm going to test and see if it's my wireless causing the blue screens, as it loves to crash my network, crash services in windows, and other stuff. I have it disabled in the BIOS now, but haven't uninstalled the software yet.

Any recommendations on programs to run hard? I have BurnInTest now, but I'm not sure how long you should even run that as that stresses the hell out of your hardware.

If you want a better picture of the blue screen, all I have to do is reboot and I can take a pic with my brothers camera! :P

I also got another letter from Dell today about my warranty expiring soon. In the letter, they offered me $229 for coverage until 2011... very tempting I might add. Their last offer was the full $299. Shall I?

First I dunno about that warranty... personally I'd said no in a heartbeat and put that into a new laptop, $229 is a large chunk of a new model's cost and you can always get newer/faster components. (Not to mention it will come with a warranty of its own). I've not checked if Intel's price slashing on Core 2 Duo's means Merom is cheaper now via Dell's website. Then again, your config is a step above my Pentium M and 1gb of RAM, although it got a 7800GTX GO upgrade the last time I sent mine in for repair.

Why didn't ya just call dell about the problem, it would have saved ya a good deal of time by now? If you are still adamant about testing your laptop, I suggest you boot into the built-in diagnostic program and do the full extended batteryrun through... if it picks up a single problem in there then Dell will pretty quickly go from troubleshooting to setting up the return process. My laptop loved to shut itself down during that test, which completely befuddled the techs but made it a pretty quick affair to get the unit shipping in and back to me within a week. I forget which key, but it tells you on the first screen which one it is.
