general pc upgrade

Post by haaaam »

hey guys ive been reading on the pros and cons of gaming on 6 bit vista and i know theoretically i get to use the whole 4 gigs but does anyone have first hand experience of gaming in 64 bit vista? All i really play is WoW, BF2, COD4 as well as the witcher and ill be getting fallout 3 and left 4 dead. I just have xp professional 32 at the moment and im trying to decide if i should just wait for windows 7 and save an odd $200. Cheers

Gaming feels the same for me on 64bit compared to 32bit. You will notice a speed decrease going from XP to Vista, but you also get DX10, so if you have a good video card and processor, you can raise the eye candy more in vista. I haven't switched back and forth from XP to vista in a while, so the speed decrease may not even be noticable since SP1.

I have had a couple of minor programs that weren't compatible with 64bit windows, but it was easy to find something that was compatible that did the same thing. If you plan on getting Windows 7 in the future, I would wait and save yourself the $100 (OEM Vista x64). If you don't plan on getting Windows 7, get Vista x64.

I haven't had a problem with BF2 in Vista, though I don't play the expansion packs.

good choice i just ordered the standard one about 20 minutes ago. Originally going to get the XFX black edition, but 55nm at the last minute changed my mind.

As for justifying getting 64 bit, It's not worth recognizing the extra ram unless you are running programs that access a ton of info at one time. Otherwise you're just saving a second or two here and there.

Though once you know what is compatible with x64 you won't ever want to go back.

Anyone know if Windows 7 is going to only be 64 bit?

windows 7 32 bit aswell so i'm told guys and it is just an updated version on vista it will have quicker bott up and shut down times. multi-tasking will be much better plus gamers will experience better gaming due to dx10 working better and graphics being more intense. as for vista 64 bit gaming doesn't feel any different from 32 bit but then the extra ram does help if you are running other applications in the back. you can do a lot more in 64 bit but it really only for extreme gamers and professionals.
