I think most online retailers will charge your credit card $100 but it's up to the bank to use whatever exchange rate they want and they usually charge an add'l 2~3% foreign currency fee. For the most part, I think the biggest drawback with ordering overseas is exorbitant shipping charges.

I am not sure about the exchange rates and whatnot, but I can tell you that overseas shipping as well as possible warranty issues could be a pain... I'm not sure if I would do it even if it meant saving a few pounds, just to avoid the possible headaches.

I never get anything from outside of Canada, where I live. Not only is there a chance of bad exchange rate, fees and usually expensive shipping, but we get hit by customs really bad (especially if shipped UPS). I got charged freaking $37 on a $50 item from the States through UPS. That's when I learned my lesson.

Bear in mind that even if the currency conversion fee and shipping still worked out as being reasonable, when it gets imported to the UK you'd have to pay import duty and VAT on top of the price (including shipping) you paid for the goods. So that will easily add on 30% to the price of the items. And depending on which courier you go with they will charge you even more for "sorting out the customs and import duty and fee's on your behalf" Which is a load of crap really, but once you get lumped with it you can't really not pay it.

Do you know anyone in the states who could ship it out to you with a low declared value? That would get around most of the extra fees.

I'm sure if you pay in advance a few people on here would be willing to help ;)

There's no guarantee that it will pass customs without extra fees though, but the odds are better doing it like this.
