Is Netbook good for Programmers/Modelers

Post by AshSanak »

Hi guys!

I am a Chemical/Environmental Engineer. My work involves use of software (simulation)packages like EnviroPro, AutoCAD, ArcGIS(GIS modeler) and Aspen etc. I also use Matlab and C++ to create programs that will solve problems that otherwise can't be soved by already existing modeling packages.

I am interested in buying LG Netbook. Keeping in view the products I will be using, do guys recommend it? Just so you know, something like EnviroPro takes around 469 MB of disk space.

Please reply, I will really appreciate yor feedback.

Thank you!
Ash

For what you say you're using it for, no. You might want to get a cheap laptop instead. Netbooks are far too small and too slow for your use.
Intel Core i5-3570K @ 4.2Ghz @ 1.16V (CPU-Z + LinX)
Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H F14 BIOS
ASUS GTX 460 768MB @ 800/1950
Kingston HyperX DDR3 8GB @ DDR-1333
Corsair AX750
Crucial M4 128GB
Western Digital Black 1TB
Cooler Master Hyper 212+ EVO

Netbooks have single core processors still, so I doubt you would want to try to use it for those applications.

AutoCAD? ArcGIS? I'd say forgo the cheap laptop, too and go for something a bit more midrange...

Hard drive space isn't want you need to be concerned about. It's easy enough to use externals. It's the performance (or lack thereof) that's going to frustrate you if you don't get fast enough hardware.

Nix the netbook idea...you want a fast processor with plenty of RAM to keep those apps happy and efficient. For 3D modeling, a good video card likely will help as well! Also, the small screen would be the pits for work of that type. Hell, when I program I usually have about 5 apps open and use every pixel of both my 24" WS LCD along with my 20" WS LCD and I still wish for more. :)

I own a Netbook and ran Pro/E very little on it at my last job. Save your pennies and buy a better laptop. Get a true dual core, a chipset that supports more than 2GB of memory and a dedicated video card.

Awwwww...I had my heart set on one of those snazzy white LG Netbooks!!

But you guys are right, I should go for something that will "perform" well.......

Thank you all for your replies!
