Is NVIDIA ESA Dead? Remember Enthusiast System Architecture?

Post by Apoptosis »

Remember this article from 2007 - http://www.legitreviews.com/article/586/1/

I contacted NVIDIA this morning to see if they still promote ESA and they replied with this:
ESA is a spec

We submitted the spec and it has been adopted by the usb-if. So at this point no new modifications to the spec are needed or desired

Nvidia continues to support ESA compliant devices through our systems tools which include performance monitoring and tuning tools
If you come over to the NVIDIA compliant devices page - http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_cer ... ducts.html

You can see that only one dell system has changed the Dell XPS 730 was added and that system was announced back in May 2008!!! Seems like 12 months has passed and no new ESA hardware has come out...

I'm calling the spec and the force behind it as being dead.

I vaguely remember the standard. But I also remember it being pretty damn cool. Too bad really that it never took off.

BTX on the other hand, good riddance.

Well that brings up another point... What happened to AMD's DTX standard that was announced in 2007 as well - http://www.legitreviews.com/article/580/1/

I have no recollection of DTX. Reading up on it now, even though it's a moot point.

After skimming that article it seems more viable now than ever. With HTPC popularity taking off and AMD solutions the clear choice why not try to revamp this standard? Especially now that they have ATi in their pockets they could make some pretty slick all-in-one boxes. Top that off with lower manufacturing processes that consume less power and produce less heat. Since you have some industry pull why not contact AMD about the standard and see what they say?

I guess they skipped straight from mATX to ITX.
