Core i7 Owners Benchmark Request - LameXP
Core i7 Owners Benchmark Request - LameXP
I'm not sure if some of you have heard of this program but I stumbled upon it a while back. It was a breath of fresh air over having to write my own command line options in EAC. The program is very much multithreaded as it uses all four cores on my Core2Quad. If you have more than one core it will run multiple instances of LAME to speed up audio encoding.
Now my request...
Would someone be kind enough to see if this application will run 8 instances? And, I'm curious if there is an improvement in encode times with and without Hyper Threading enabled. After the program is done encoding it will give a total time at the end of the encode window.
Thanks.

Re: Core i7 Owners Benchmark Request - LameXP
I assume you mean instances as in more than one app of LameXP running..but it wouldn't me do more than one. so I guess yo meant cores
I ran it at stock speed with HT on and off. Encoded a 17 track album from The Roots(one of the realest forms of Hip-Hop you can listen to. None of that trash you hear on the radio.) I ran the test with HT on twice since I didn't take a screen grab of the first one(39 seconds) . all cores (HT on and off) were at 100% during each encoding btw..hope I got most of what you asked for.

Re: Core i7 Owners Benchmark Request - LameXP
For some reason I can't the right side of your SS. I see that it's ~ 4 seconds faster with HT on though. Did the program load/encode 8 tracks at one time with HT on?
Thanks for taking the time to run this and indulging my curiosity.

Re: Core i7 Owners Benchmark Request - LameXP
Not a problem. I like seeing what my rig can do..Actually it loaded/encoded all of the tracks at the same time. I did another album a minute ago, and even expanded the window a bit to look and it said 16 instances were running during it w/HT on. I also encoded an album that had 20 tracks and it took only 35 seconds. might depend on the length of the song. I know one of the shots I took had a track that was around 8 minutes long

Nice! I remember the days when it would take 30 minutes to encode an CD. Thanks again for running the test.
*EDIT*
Out of curiosity what quality settings are you running? Typically I run these settings...

Re: Core i7 Owners Benchmark Request - LameXP
that's what I said when it finished lol Thanks for showing me this prog..I had a different one that took 3-4 minutes and wouldn't let me go over 192kbps.Major_A wrote:I remember the days when it would take 30 minutes to encode an CD.
I use these settings, but when I ran the test, the Algorithm setting a was notch short of max. I reran the prog at MAX Algorithm with the same album and same bitrate, and it added about 3-5 seconds..still pretty damn good if you ask me

Re: Core i7 Owners Benchmark Request - LameXP
Now I'm curious how much faster your i7 is over my C2Q. What type of music do you listen to? Maybe we can find a CD we both have and get some direct comparison going. FYI when I rip a CD to my hard drive I use Nero to rip it as a 44100Hz 32-bit wav file then use LameXP to convert it to MP3.

Re: Core i7 Owners Benchmark Request - LameXP
I listen to mostly hip-hop, but I listen to almost anything.(except country, Pop, and church music) Rammstein, Buckethead are a few of my faves outside of hip-hip...I use WMP for ht ripping part(never really knew what program would be good or better)

Re: Core i7 Owners Benchmark Request - LameXP
Do you have any old school rap? AKA Tha Chronic, 2Pac, Snoop Dogg - Doggy Style, etc? I haven't really listened to rap in a long time so I don't have anything new. The newest stuff I have is all rock.

Yes I do
i don't listen to the new guys.mainly because they aren't rap in my opinion and are pimped harder than their women are. But Pac, Dre, Snoop, yup I got.

Let's do the Doggystyle CD with your settings, Qval = 0 and Lame Algorithm Quality = Maximum. I'll report back in a bit with my results.

Re: Core i7 Owners Benchmark Request - LameXP
track number 4 on down is misnamed due to WMP..more or less the CD's fault. it's always done that to hidden tracks that aren't mentioned on the track list already. I have the same setting you have. I assume overclocking helps on the time but I'm at stock(2.6ghz)

I'd say that the i7 is a beast then because I'm at 4 Ghz.
