Gaming Server Built

Post by Guru »

Hello,

I have been reading this forum for quite some time and I have to admit that this site always solves my problems.

I want to built a high end gaming server and I'm looking to host a website and games obviously like COD5 or WOW or something.

I am a NOOB when it comes to building and setting up and all that good stuff so, please forgive my noobiness. I'm looking to spend about $1500-$2000.

Also, I don't know what I need for the server so, could some of you help out please. Thank you.

Are your hopes here to "rent" the server to other people or are you building in for yourself? The problem with building it for yourself is the dedicated speed of the Internet into the box. If you set it up in your house the only way to do that would be to rent a business dedicated line from your local provider. While prices of bandwidth have come down you don't want to pay that T1 line every month.

Are you just wanting a dedicated server for your clan? Or are you after a rig that you can setup as a dedicated host for local LAN parties? If you just want one for a dedicated LAN box you can run a pretty basic dual core setup and it would handle the load just fine. That is assuming though that CoD has dedicated server files and the game doesn't actually need to be run.

What is the difference between dedicated clan and dedicated LAN box(Withing my network I believe)? If i got it right, I think I'm looking to host dedicated clan for online games. Sorry total noob:( Thank you for your help though.

If you are on a "team" in CoD then they are known as a clan. Most clan's that can afford it will rent a server for their game so they can administer the server as they see fit. A LAN server is something that you would run over a (Local Area Network) so you aren't actually connected to the Internet.

Oh ok..I got it now.thank you for helping it understand. I want to do dedicated clan or something but mostaly, I want to host it on my own though. Also, I want to host a website on the same server as well.

Get a Phenom II X4 with around 8 GB of RAM. From there the most expensive thing I would suggest would be to buy a hardware based RAID controller and some SSD drives.

Just cheaper with the AMD, but if you already have a quad core then that would work fine. The most taxing part of the build will be in the storage system. If you have a small website and only run a few dedicated server clients then the CPU will be fine.
