Involved Equipment
- Desktop running Windows 7 x64 RTM (host) w/wall connection to the University's network and internet
- Laptop running Windows 7 x86 RTM (client) w/wireless connection to desktop
- DD-WRT v24 router (Linksys WRT54G v1) set as DHCP Forwarder w/static IP (from host) that the laptop connects to; the router is pulling internet from ICS and the second Gbit ethernet on the desktop
What Works
- Desktop internet and network access
- Laptop internet access
- Laptop can access desktop by IP but not by name
- Laptop can ping desktop successfully
What Doesn't Work
- Laptop cannot be accessed from desktop
- Laptop cannot be pinged from desktop
What I've Tried
- Disable SPI Firewall in router
- Enable laptop as DMZ on router
Why is this all necessary? The University only gave me one port, using the router on the port is permitted but cuts my speeds down (FTP), as in 10MB/sec versus 2.5MB/sec through router. There is no wireless in the dorm anyway and even if there was the wireless and wired are on seperate subnets or something so I can't access the wired from wireless and vice-versa unless I use IPs.
I need to be able to access my laptop from my desktop to sync emails and what-not.

That's the breaks with College Internet.  They control it whether you like it or not.  I'm surprised they haven't come down on you for using the router.

In case you didn't notice above, the router is allowed. It's just that when using it, speeds (through the router) drop to squat versus PC plugged into wall. I think there's a problem with the router's Internet port since if I plug both computers into LAN ports the speeds are fine...dicecca112 wrote:That's the breaks with College Internet. I figured it out!  I also saved it for future reference so I'm not back here after New Year's complaining (I take my computer home over Winter Break).
1. Enable ICS
2. Disable DHCP Server in router but leave router set to RECEIVE DHCP address
3. Plug ICS Ethernet into LAN side (NOT Internet port) of router
4. Router must be in AP mode
5. Set default gateway of clients (who connect to router) to 192.168.0.1
This allows ICS to DHCP all clients, the router acts as a bridge. The clients have internet, and access runs both ways. Caveat: HomeGroups don't work. But I don't really care...
The rule is "secured" routers. Why you would NOT secure a router is beyond me...WPA2 FTW.
