My last gaming ATI card was the rare Radeon 64 SE...I gave up on ATI because they never supported 3D gaming like Nvidia did (at least for a while until they too stopped and now got back to it).
It sucks that I prefer AMD so my Mobo is crossfire....I hate non standards! lol
Shaolin, have you tried the 3D vision display. I'm actually a little curious about it.

As far as I'm concerned the GT300 is not even in the picture at this moment. AMD has essentially made the GTX 285 redundant with the cheaper, less power hungry HD5850. The 295 is still king in terms of performance, but that's only until the 5870 X2 is released.

i think currently amd is really doing quite well with their 5870. However, with nvidia releasing the card a bit later, they can have tweaks to give them a performance increase. NOw the question is whether or not hte card will run cooler and have more feature than the amd card. The 5870 is sure a very competitive card from amd.

I demo it and was blown away.
I used to have the edimensional 3d glasses until there was no longer support for them so I was dying to get back.
There is no bigger "upgrade" that I can think off.

This Engadget article quote from th OP links speaks volumes to me,

"Beyond this, the technobabble runs deep, but the long and short of it is this: NVIDIA could be right on the cusp of delivering a single chip that can handle tasks that were typically separated for the CPU and GPU, and we needn't tell you just how much your life could change should it become a reality."

What this tells me is bigger, more power hungry, huge transitor count, monolithic design for less real gain (especially considering the ever increasing CPU horsepower availble these days).

AMD/ATI will ride the wave of the first DX11 GPU, 5870/5850, and reap the financial benefits in cruise mode, while Nvidia is waiting to release. Then when Nvidia releases their new expensive 3xx solutions AMD/ATI will slash costs on the current crop and release 5890, 5870/5850 X2 etc. We have all been here before in recent years (88xx vs 48xx) and many of us will bite even though we barely have DX 10 capable games worth playing yet. What a wierd world. I'm placing my bets behind AMD though, aquiring ATI was a good move on their part IMHO, in hindsight.

ATI is doing good things right now, but I know that Nvidia will be revving their engines to come back. It's always a push-pull with them. Honestly I could care less who has the better, more ubar card as long as they stay competitive and keep prices down.

That's always been my only criticizm with ATi, driver support. At least lately ATi seems to be releasing new versions of thier drivers on an almost bi-montly basis. I don't know if this means there's been some problems they've been trying to correct or reflects a new focus on actually supporting thier hardware post-sales has yet to be determined.
