Replace the batteries in an APC UPS 1000 or Buy a new one?

I was just given an APC UPS 1000 series battery backup since the batteries are dead. I found replacement batteries for $85, so I was wondering if you guys thought it was worth that to protect my HTPC, HD cable box, Audio Receiver and Subwoofer. I don't have anything on it now and was going to get a decent power strip, but was thinking for $85 this might be the best bet. Think I should get new batteries or save up and buy new?

yeah, batteries for that and a decent surge protector for it aswell.

As long as the controller (the box) is good then the batteries are the cheap part and do need to be replaced over time. They do have a life span.

The big 7kva unit I have here at work is 10+ years old and on its 3rd set, and the 2kva unit I have is ~6 years old and is on its 2nd set (replaced in august). I have another APC unit like yours but its with a saddle pack. Its only a year old and hasn't even been through a sustained outage yet.

I use the same UPS and several of the 1500 and usually replace the battery when its time. Have not had any problems (and i send the old battery back to be recycled in the box the new one comes in)

I always just waited till they run the backups on sale somewhere and buy a new one. I got the APC Back-UPS XS 1300 for around $120 from Circuit City hen they ran them on sale. I use one for my main system and one for my living room setup, even though the living room pulls tons of power (talking 700w wit hthe computer, hd sat box, 50" plasma, and the 6.1 Onkyo surround all running) it still works for what I need it to. It takes care of the power surges/blinks.

I figure for the newer technology in the unit itself, it is worth the extra $30-$40 every couple years.

You should definitely replace the batteries in your Smart-UPS 1000. The SUA1000 that you show in your picture, is a great network grade UPS. This is not like the home user units such as the XS, CS, BR series of UPSs. The Smart-UPS 1000 SUA1000 is actually a network grade UPS that can provide surge protection, protection from brownouts, spikes and sags. Unlike the XS/CS/ES units, it outputs a sine wave, has AVR Boost and Drop, and provides constant clean power.

I say this to customers all the time, don't throw out a good UPS just because the batteries have gone bad. A lot of people think that the UPS has expired as well. The UPS has no moving parts inside and with fresh batteries and good care, can last many years. As another user stated earlier, he has 10+ year old symmetra that still works.


If the UPS isn't giving you any problems, you should not replace it. By replacing a good working UPS, you could be buying yourself into problems!


Make sure when you shop online for batteries that you get a good quality set of batteries. Beware of vendors who sell batteries too cheap, way below market price. There are many great vendors and a lot of shady vendors out there which sell 1 year life span batteries. So if it looks too good to be true, it probably is!

Definately worth replacing the batteries.

Shop around and don't just go for the cheapest they simply won't last!

APC use the following manufactured batteries in their units BB Batteries, CSB Batteries, Panasonic and Yuasa all of which are excellent reliable batteries.

Shop around for these brands and you will find some goods deals....

I did pick up a pair of new batteries for it and it's working great so far.

I have the same unit with dead batteries. Can I replace those small batteries with much bigger external batteries? I know you can replace them with slightly bigger batteries but if I attach 12v 75ah, will the charging circuit survive?
