Building a Socket 479 PC

Post by mongol05 »

As some of you may know, I won a Pentium M 760 at Quakecon this year, and originally, I was planning on building myself a new laptop. Well, now that the excitement of winning has worn off a little, reason has had a chance to step in and shown me that, though I would like a new, shiny laptop, my parents are in need of a new computer much more than I am.

So, here's my thought: I going to use my 760 to build them a new desktop. Here's some of the parts I have in mind:

Pentium M 760 (2.0 GHz, 533 MHz FSB)
DFI 855GME-MGF Socket 479 Intel 855GME Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
Kingston ValueRAM 512MB 184-Pin DDR PC2700 SDRAM System Memory
TOSHIBA Black IDE DVD Burner Model SD-R5372V
Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB 3.5" Serial ATA150 Hard Drive
CHENMING 118-AL-BLK-0-300PSU Black/ Silver Computer Case

I would greatly appreciate your input. I had thought about putting in a video card, but I wouldn't be getting anything too pricy, since my parents aren't going to be playing games any time soon.

So, there you go gang. I excitedly await your thoughts.

Pretty good, Pentium M has the ability to knock the stuffings out of the A64 4000+ when overclocked, especially the 2.13Ghz one. But for a parents' PC, more than adequate.

not bad for a parent's system...the only thing I see is that maybe you might want to beef the PSU up to 400W, just in case you want a little headroom. I think everything else will be great for them :)

I think that psu would be fine?

If your not getting a powerfull GFX card then no need..
The Dothan CPU uses very little power!

If your going to get a GFX card -> got for a passivly cooled one --> keep the noise down ever more --> that would be 1 quiet, efficient and powerfull desktop

I know, I was just saying just in case he wanted to give them something else later he could, though not much more. For that configuration, a 300W is just fine

I think the only thing they'd ever want is more hard drive space.

you should be good for 1-2 more HDD's
after that you might need to upgrade the PSU!

Each HDD uses about 25W of power!

I wouldn't worry for a while!
