Are you looking at getting this as your primary drive? Most of the "green" hard drives are 5400 RPM with as few as platters as possible. From past experience the onboard cache increase isn't noticeable. What drives specifically are you looking at so we can give you a better answer.

yeah im concerning about the green caviar western digital 32mb cache that says varie rpm assuming 5400rpm. for primary drive.
when you said onboard cache do you mean other hdd is not onboard?

I was saying that when I went from 8MB to 32MB of cache I didn't notice a difference. From what I've read the WD Caviar Green drives run cool and are extremely quiet. Because they are 5400 RPM drives they do seem to lag behind most 7200 RPM drives.
So I guess it would depend. If you're putting it in a HTPC or something that you want quiet then the Green is the way to go.

If you have both drives I'd run a free hard drive test to see how they perform. I don't have either of those here or i'd help you myself.

oh i see. i thought you mean onboard like graphic cards..... onboard graphic vs graphic card. i thought in hdd will be like that when you said onboard.... 32mb cache onboard is like onboard graphic. haha glad its not.Major_A wrote:I was saying that when I went from 8MB to 32MB of cache I didn't notice a difference. yeah i have 7200rp, 8b cache but it fail. wondering if it is faster or slower compare to 5400rpm 32mb cache.

Might as well get the more cache drive, even though it spins at a lower RPM it likely has more technology behind it. And like I said to keep the Green drives to run cool and quiet they use fewer platters. Less platters = less likely to fail.

Just my opinion, but I would go with the 7200 rpm drive. You can always opt for a 7200 drive with either 16 or 32 cache.
