motherboard not getting power

Post by Wavid »

my asus m4a79xtd evo was perfectly fine before i decided to do some cable management, but after my little cleaning session, the SB light no longer lights up. i already checked my connections, so i want to know if something serious happened. any ideas?

Hrmm...How did you clean it? was it something that caused static to build up and then it shorted out? Can you test the psu outside of the case and verify that it is still working, no power I would start there

um..well i moved some SATA cables through some cable management loops..then i tried putting a 20+4 ATX power connector through there, put the power connector back in its original place, and all was done after i grounded myself on the case. it's made of steel, so it SHOULD work.

also, there's no other machine to test my PSU on..mine is the only home-built one in my house.

There is a way to jump pins on the psu to see if it will at least power up. I nor anyone else can or will take responsibility for this next part if you get hurt or damage your psu. You are doing this at your own risk. I have done it countless times and never zapped myself or damaged anything so as long as you are careful you will be fine. Here is a guide that will show you how to do it.

if it fires up and the fan is going that's a good sign. I am guessing that doesn't happen when trying to boot?

I would start at testing the PSU and then we can move on from there.

Sometimes the capacitors need to drain before it works again. Every now and then when the power goes out abruptly I have to do this. Flip the switch in the back of the PSU to the off position. Now hold down the power button for 10 seconds to pull the power out of the capacitors. Flip the switch to the on position and give it a try.
