My "friendly" local electric company is seeking a 24% rate hike. While I don't think they will get the full 24% I am sure the Public Utilities Commision will allow them at least 10-15%. Bottom line is that I need to save power where I can..to wit, How can I set my PC to go to sleep after X min idle and then wake at the press of a button?? or do I simply have to turn it off the old fashion way?

I normally right click the desktop and go to properties. Under the tab called screen saver you will find "Monitor Power". Click the button that says "Power" and you should be able to adjust what you want from there.

over the next year, expect a 15% jump in electric rates and a big 75% increase in natural gas prices! Glad I have an electric furnace and water heater in the new house!!

Doesn't that just control the Monitor?? I want to get as close as I can to turning it off without having to re-boot when I get back to it.
Atlas energy here in Texas has said there will be a 75-90% increase in Natural gas prices over the winter. I know the named reason for Gasoline prices going up but I havent heard anything as to why Natural gas is as well.

no it does monitor, hard disks, and system standby

Heavy damage by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita mean it probably will take months to return offshore natural gas production to normal levels. It may take into next year for some of the heavily damaged oil and gas platforms to be repaired. The Interior Department said only 10 percent of the Gulf region's offshore oil production and 28 percent of the gas production has been brought back on line. While most drilling rigs and platforms survived the storm, Norton said repairs "clearly will be in the billions of dollars."

on the same popup (Power Options Properties), my comp at work has a hibernate tab. If you enable hibernation, it saves everything in memory to your hard drive, then shuts down. Next time you want to use the computer, wake it up from hibernation and it will automatically go to the previous state before hibernation. So basically its turning the computer on and off without the boot times.

Otherwise, yes, like Nate said, the main tab of this screen allows you to manage the power options for the monitor, hard disks, and standby mode.

As far as I know, standby is similar to hibernate, except that standby doesn't really turn off the computer... so you computer will "wake up" quicker from standby mode than it will from hibernate mode.
