USB 3.0 PCIe 1x Card Question

Post by Major_A »

I want to buy a USB 3.0 PCIe card. The problem is all of my PCIe 1x slots are being used (soundcard and eSATA card). I do have a spare 8x PCIe video card slot open. The question is if I put the USB card into the 8X PCIe slot will it lower the speed of my video card from 16x to 8x?

Thanks.

I think yes. I believe if it's populated, regardless of the bandwidth of the device it changes the lane speeds. I'm not 100% sure but that's logical to me.

That's what I was thinking too. Now I need to decide if I want to do it. I was thinking about putting my GTX 260+ back in my PC to use as a dedicated PhysX card. Decisions, decisions...
