So i have:
An ethernet cable
A desktop PC (networked to a router)
And a laptop
Can I get the two PC's to connect to each other via the network cable? I know you need a crossover cable but dont have one with me.
The router has all its upload ports in use atm, so was wondering if i could piggyback off of another computer and i want to transffer files accross the computers.

Basically I want a 'mini network' between my laptop and desktop for file sharing between the two and with internet connection sharing for my main PC to laptop.
Ive manually configured the IP addresses and subnet mask's, taking the gateway and DNS from the desktops internet network connection settings, net 1, and applying them to net 2. And can sucessfully ping from laptop to desktop and vica versa, but despite both PC's being in the same workgroup they wont see each other.

Have you shared a folder yet? R-Click on whatever folder and goto the "sharing" tab.DMB2000uk wrote:Basically I want a 'mini network' between my laptop and desktop with internet connection sharing for my main PC to laptop.

You should have it setup in this order; Router -> PC -> Laptop
On the PC goto Network Connections in Control Panel and click "setup a home or office network" -> chose "this computer connects to internet and others connect through this pc"
On the laptop do the same but chose "this computer connects via another pc to the internet"
I suspect all you need to do is share a folder, since you can ping the pc and are using the same workgroup.
A software firewall can also block file sharing too.
Haha, I got to that conclusion just before i read your reply
Yeah my norton was disabled already.
