File Sharing not working again.

Post by geokilla »

So my file sharing over my 3 computers stopped working again. I've tried using another workgroup such as home instead of *****, and it still doesn't work. All of my 3 computers are connected to the same workgroup. Because the network is not workking, I cannot copy files from one network to another and print my homework.

I tried typing the IP adress of my dad's computer and it can't even find the computer on the network. 2 of the computers are wireless while the other one is connected directly to the router. Please help.

Is it possibly a firewall issue?? Most firewalls can be manually configured to allow connections from certain IP/MAC Addresses. Refer also to your user manual for your wireless router. You should be able to login to the router using your browser, using something like http://192.168.0.1/
Make sure DHCP in enabled on the router, and in "properties" when you right-click on your network. A static IP can cause issues on a computer in a workgroup when a router is trying to assign an IP to it. Most home routers default to DHCP. Make sure that file and printer sharing is turned on, as well.

I doubt it's a firewall issue. This happened to both of my routers, and on both routers file sharing used to work using both static IP and DHCP. I need to use static IP because I need to portforward, so only my laptop is on DHCP. It just suddenly decided to stop working one day.

Another weird thing is that a few months ago. My computer was able to see my dad's computer via the network in my workgroup, but the laptop couldn't see my dad's computer but it could see my computer. Then my dad's computer could see my computer but not the laptop.

My current router is Linksys WRT54GS version 7. Just got it back from RMA.

Silly suggestion, but try running the network setup wizard and while there, a great way to double-check to make sure file sharing is turned on(locally), if you haven't already.
Make sure also that all services in services.msc, pertinent to networking are running?!!?
