so i finally figured this problem out. I had to change the ip of my router from 192.168.0.1 to something else in order to keep windows from trying to use the same ip as the default gateway. That is what we assumed, but I never tried it. today I need to get a computer without a wireless card to copy a file off of so I did it. changed it to 192.168.1.1 and now the sharing works. the other computer will connect to you as 192.168.0.1 as the shared connection on that other computer.

did you try manually changing the IP of the router?
