new AGP video card

Post by bigblockmatt »

Hey guys.

I would like upgrade the video card since my girlfriend just got me COD4. I dont know what to get. I would like to upgrade the whole comp, but dont have the funds for that. so i think i am going to have to stick with the current system but just new video card. I currently have an ATI x850 -AGP video card, so i would need to stay with agp. i know that it hinders my options to some degree, but i'm ok with that. If i have more time on my hands to play, i would go for a whole new build, but for now, the vid card will have to do. I looked on newegg and realized i've been out of the loop for some time and have no idea what i am looking at. i have no preference with ATI or Nvidia.

Thanks for the help and the suggestions!

well if you stick with ATI something like the X1950 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814161071

or

if switch to Nvidia the 7900gs http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814150174

The problem is that AGP is so damn expensive for what you get.

Ironically enough, I have to recommend the same 2 cards, both $149.99 after MIR.

The 7900gs overclocks better, and is faster, but when it comes to shader intensive games, like Oblivion, you will see the x1950 shine. You really can't go wrong with either one.

Obviously you want to move that PC into the PCI-E world as soon as funds permit.

AMD/ATI will be releasing a AGP version of it's new HD38XX series before to much longer if you're interested in waiting just a bit longer. Last I read Nvidia has no plans of supporting AGP with any DX10/DX10.1 cards, but you never know what the future will bring.

i recently got my Sapphire X1650PRO, and that brought some needed performance to my SIG PC, and that was for $85 so i wouldnt call AGP that more expensive, plus it has great clocks(@625/1700), so you should go for the X19xx variant(enough $$$ permitting) and you will love it until you do a MAJOR upgrade to your computer, plus im sure you dont want to wait seeing as you just got the game

well, i got it all installed - with no issues at all.

I do have a problem though. When playing a video, say through realplayer and windows media player, I am getting some nasty lines in the video. i have tried different movies, and they all have the lines. the lines are random and were not there with my previous vid card. I used the latest drivers from the website (not what was included on cd). I tried to take screen shot of the lines, but that didnt work... got any ideas?
