Re: posting but not loading OS
The hard drive test.
Erm, diagnostics then hdd test or something, its not hard to find. Then select your hard drive manufacturer and run their test.
There are usually short/long tests that you can do try the short one first, then for fun try the long one. Afterwards, if its as simple as bad sectors or something then it will tell you the sectors found and ask if you want to repair them, which you would if it found any errors.

Re: posting but not loading OS
neither the short test or the longer test found ANY errors.
RAM tested OK.
HDD tested OK.
is it the PSU?
is it the motherboard?
im going to try setting the voltages to what ken recommended. if i change the voltages on my mushkin, will that void my warranty? (havent OCed them yet)

Just set the memory to 2.1v and your warranty is safe. Even if they are rated for only 2.0v, Mushkin won't know ;)
Chances are, your ram is using Micron chips which can take ~2.4v, and if they are made with the (slightly) cheaper ProMOS chips 2.2v is still ok.
You just want to increase each of the main voltages a tad, just to be sure the board isn't undervolting.

Re: posting but not loading OS
voltages set to
vcore: 1.375v
memory: 2.1v (timings loosened to 5-5-5-15)
chipset is 1.30v
still doing the same problem, maybe lasting a few seconds longer. last thing i see happening is the windows login thing saying "windows is starting up" and then it snaps to black again.
what should i be upping if anything at all???

Is the chip set or CPU overheating? Try add a fan to blow on the socket area and see if it will last longer.stopthekilling77 wrote:voltages set to

Re: posting but not loading OS
ive already got my U-120extreme on the cpu... there are a total of 5 case fans, with 3 running (PSU has its own fan so why bother with the lower chamber of the case, and the rear exhaust doesnt isnt quiet when the upper exhaust is going at the same time)
maybe run it open with floor fan focused on the board?

Repair from XP disk, failing that nuke the HD and reload. I hate nuking one but a lot of times it's the only way to tell if it's hardware or some of Gates premium handy work gone south. (He's supposed to be retiring from day to day operations this year)

Re: posting but not loading OS
if you have xp isntalled on another hard drive you can put that harddrive's cables into your computer, then boot from that hardisk, then you can copy any important files to the harddisk from the other computer, and nuke you hard drive and do a clean install

or Ubuntu LiveCD and a thumb drive, move important files over, assuming your drive is big enough, or have it mount your vista drive and move your XP files to Vista, and then move back, or still on the Ubuntu Live burn you files

XP Repair install
Please read carefully and make sure you followed the warning links before initiating the Repair Install. You can print a text version for reference. repair.txt
1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.
To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER. do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read Warning#2!
6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
If you get files not found during the copying stage.
Blaster worm warning: Do not immediately activate over the internet when asked, enable the XP firewall before connecting to the internet. You can activate after the firewall is enabled. Control Panel - Network Connections. Right click the connection you use, Properties and there is a check box on the Advanced page.

7. Reapply updates or service packs applied since initial Windows XP installation. Please note that a Repair Install using an Original pre service pack 1 or 2 XP CD used as the install media will remove SP1/SP2 respectively and service packs plus updates isssued after the service packs will need to be reapplied.

Service Pack 2
An option I highly recommend; is creating a Slipstreamed XP CD with SP1, SP2, etc. .

Re: posting but not loading OS
followed those steps, rebooted, and its "finishing installation" you know the loading screen where it cycle through all the "new" and "advanced" features of XP but it still says "37 minutes remaining" even an hour later... mouse moves and the activity bar keeps going (as well as the scrolling "new" info...) but the progress bar just isnt making any headway...
leave it or retry?
**EDIT** new decision:
im backing up my game saves and so on and so forth,
slicking the whole drive down to zeros with DB&N, and
lastly i'll reinstall JUST XP since i'm curious to if Vista sharing the same physical harddrive space (even on different partitions) might have caused the problem
honestly i just want to OC a bit more and enjoy my Bioshock. T.T
