Looking good.
I'm also a whiz when it comes to Linux (Linux Administrator for 4 years). Also, you could also probably get a forum performance increase by upgrading to vBulletin as well. You would probably have to recode the news for the front page if it's reading from the forums for it's information.
You still have updates to worry about, but nothing on the scale like the Windows Updates, plus you don't have to worry about all the stupid automatic reboots, unless you recompile the kernel, which I always do from the very beginning anyways.

When it comes to actual performance for a webserver, I have to say Linux performs much better than your average Windows server will. Once the box is actually secured, it's pretty secure.Dragon_Cooler wrote:PFFFFFTTT....why linux when WINDOWS IS SO MUCH MORE STABLE!!!!

Cybercon is huge... They host 82,994 web servers according to security space. They just sold 6,000 square feet of rack space to a company that is going to use it all... It's insane how many PC's are in this single building.

I've been playing around on the new server a bit today in my little free time and I'm pleased with the ping results and the server load times... This sucker is much faster than the current server and the forums and images fly on my connection. As you can see from the image above the ping time and route is improved for me and the same will hold true to all those in America and Europe as the server has moved from LA to STL and is on a better network. I'm very pleased so far and once all the server is ready for all to see I look forward to seeing your ping times and if the load times have improved for all our visitors. Digital Puppy lives in LA and the server in St. Louis pings lower than the one a few miles away in LA! Impressive

Look @ the first Pic. To the right of LR's server..........Someone likes Dell!
Apop, you are ~17 hops from the LA server and 11 hops from the new one in STL??? I would have thought that since you only live some miles from the new server there would only be ~5 hops.
You (personal) ISP's route the interweb is weird..........not that it's a problem since the access times are so low.
PM me the new IP address if you don't mind, I wanna see what ping times I get compared to the current server....
You don't want to install CS on it b4 the weekend? LOL

Here's my Tracert results from me to the current server. I've left out IP address's etc.

11 hops to new server. the first 4 are inside my ISP ~117ms avg ping times
Old = 161ms
New= 117ms
~44ms quicker and 3 less hops
Strangely I follow the same route to each server for the first 6 hops. The ping times are the same for me up till London. After that I take a different route, either LA or STL and the LA route gets alot slower. I get killed in Chicago (~111ms) & LA (~161ms)
Remember this is ping times from Ireland to STL & LA! (LR is an International site after all)
