if you would care to look at those benches
you would see that your numbers are what you should be expecting with the current drivers :O. Right now both nvid/ati are having huge driver issues with dx10

I know you've already decided on the 8800GTS, but ATI.AMD has really managed to get more performance from the 2900XT's with the latest drivers, see tweaktown's latest review.
But still with heat, noise and power, the 8800's are much better.

I chose the HD 2900xt, for this reason:

It shows that the Drivers were indeed at fault, and with update in drivers, performance is much better then before.
