I downloaded the call of juarez dx10 benchmark and I get around an average of 11 - 18 fps a second. why is this happening? I have an 8800 gtx, 4 gb of ram, and an intel core 2 duo e6600.... what am i missing ? is it because I'm running at a res of 1920x1200 on a 24" monitor? help!

if you would care to look at those benches :P you would see that your numbers are what you should be expecting with the current drivers :O. Right now both nvid/ati are having huge driver issues with dx10

I know you've already decided on the 8800GTS, but ATI.AMD has really managed to get more performance from the 2900XT's with the latest drivers, see tweaktown's latest review.

But still with heat, noise and power, the 8800's are much better.

I'd wait til around August and see if more rumors or details about the HD 2950 come out. It supposed to be a 65nm chip with 1GB of memory that runs faster and cooler plus has more texture units.

Rumors suggest August or September.

Thats an eternity to wait in computer terms, and what if it gets pushed back like the current cards were? ^_^
You could be waiting for the next best thing forever if you start to play that game!

I chose the HD 2900xt, for this reason:
Tweaktown benchmarks

It shows that the Drivers were indeed at fault, and with update in drivers, performance is much better then before.
