Is this a good move? (upgrading my cpu by .2Ghz)

Post by pcrobot »

Hey all,

As you can see in my sig I have an older processor, an Athlon 3200+. Today in a email from Newegg I found I can get the Athlon 3400+ for $40. I'm trying to decide if I should drop $40 to get a small speed boost, or keep saving until I have enough to purchase what I need for a newer build. The new build probably wont happen 'til at least fall, most likely later.

Thanks!

Changing from 3200+ to 3400+ I think it's a waste of $40... :drinkers: keep on accumulating the $$$ for the big jump :bump:

You can pick up a S939 Athlon X2 3800+ for $70, I'd probably consider that instead.

You don't fancy trying to get the 200Mhz for free with overclocking do you?

wait, the chipset for the athlon 64 3200+ will work with an Athlon X2? I was told that I had nowhere to upgrade.

Edit: I believe I have the AM2 socket, so that means I could go up to the Athlon X2 3800+

Socket AM2 supports all the latest AMD processors, which is the Athlon X2 6000+

all i know is that the s939 3800 x2 at 2.0 ghz has overclocked for me to 2.6ghz on multiple machines at stock voltage with a 20 dollar cooler. my vote is to wait for a bigger jump though, or to just overclock it a bit. I got a 3000+ (754) up to 2.4 on stock cooler.

Well it looks like it's practically unanimous... I'm not going to try to sell my old CPU, it's been moved in and out of my mobo several times, and I don't really want to buy a better CPU cooler so I can OC. I've tried OCing with the stock fan, and anything more than 10Mhz gets way to hot for my liking.

Thanks for all your help!
