Verizon Fios, Azureus, & Actiontec MI-424-WR router

Post by BiGg RiE »

OK, so I just got this service and I was looking to get some bit torents at the high speed until I read this review:

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30022/51/

Toward the end of the review it says something along the lines of P2P users being disappointed because of the limited connection allowed, like 92 or something.

I know a little about a little when it comes to the nuts and bolts of Bit Torrents. But does this mean that I won't be gettin the 20Mb troughput I'm paying for with this router?

My second question is if I have a cable modem can I still connect the fios coax cable to it then use my old router to connect the actiontec router for wireless?

The tech that installed everything told me that the service will only work with the Actiontec router they provide. I'm thinking that that can't be, because if the service is there to be addressed any capable modem should be able to pick it up and use it. But I'm not sure, if I can use any cable modem or not.

Someone anyone with some insight in this area please help and clearify. Am I out of my fast downloads for Azureus? or was the tech blowing smoke?

Thanx

You might be able to change the router, but this depends on how it's configured.
Your ISP might be using "TR69" protocol to admin your router. If this is the case, you can't change the router!
TR69 is a newish protocol for remote admin of routers, IPTV set-top boxes and VOIP ata etc.
The customer side equipment need to have a pre-set "ACS URL" set in it's firmware, then the device calls back to this URL (address of tr69 enabled server). The ISP can do mass firmware upgrades, set your link speed, open remote ports etc. all remotely.
IF they are not using this, you should be able to change the router for another cable modem, but you will need the specific router settings required (VPI/VCI, multiplexing & PPPoE user/pass etc).

Have you tried enabling encryption on your Torrent client?

What's up Ken, once again u come to aid me in my time of need, many thanx,

I got it to work fine using this ~~> http://www.portforward.com/english/rout ... orrent.htm Tutorial.

I'm getting between 150KB - 525KB!

Compared to 35KB - 210KB

Needless to say I'm very pleased with the speed.

My next question is what should my up bandwidth be for Azureus? Right now I have it set to 220KB I had it set to 120KB but my speed droped to 45KB - 150KB.

My speed is 20Mb dwn / 5Mb up

I have an Asus Crosshair with dual Gigabt Lan and both are connected. Based on that tutorial do I need to mke a static ip for both connections and open the same port on the router?

The review in my previous post said that this router doesn't support dual gigabit lan. So does that mean I won't get any gain in speed by using it?

Thanx

You just have to test and re-test your optimal upload speed.
A good guide is, 1mbit = ~100k down/up (in reality it's more, but there's overhead)

Start out by setting your upload speed to ~75% it's max and adjust from there...

BTW It's good to see you 'round these parts again! :)

Not so fast

Post by BiGg RiE »

Ok so I've been noticing that I'm not getting those high speed downloads any more so I run the Nat firwall test in azureus and it times out.

I haven't changed any settings within the router so i don't know what could be causing this.

Any suggestions on what i can check to see if there was something reset within the router settings that may have affected the download speed?

I'm maxing out @ 200 with about 50KB per download max.

And still failing the nat firewall test.

Thx,

BiGg RiE

I'm also interested in this topic since i have the same exact router and Verizon FIOS service. The only difference is that i'm actually behind this router, it is hooked up to my dads pc and it lets me get on the web, that way i dont have to get my own connection and pay a monthly fee. I also have an AM2 nforce590 board with dual gigabit LAN but since i'm not the one hooked to the router i wont take advantage of it and based on what is said above it is not even supported. As far as as download times, verizon currently provides us with 10MB/s, i tested the system with Speedtest.net and and it confirmed that, but in reality i'm getting far less more like 100kb/s to 2MB/s, which is similar to the previous poster and download speed varies depending on how far the server is. I'm still very new to this stuff and i would like to know what are the optimal settings for this router, does the NET firewall has to turned on or is it on all the time?

Higher speeds

Post by BiGg RiE »

I don't know what happend but over this past weekend I downloaded some new torents and Man was I flying. I got up to 767KBps on one of the torrents and a max overall download rate of 1.8MBps!! Wow!! :supz:

I'm still failing the nat firewall test but with speeds like that who cares?

I did start from scratch with the aforementioned tutorials but that's all I did.

I got a 4.5GB file in about 2Hrs!
Very very happy camper!

Hey barfly, you should still beable to use the tutorials I listed above just make sure you get your ipconfig numbers from the command prompt. You'll also need the password from ur pops to get into the router. You'll need to type in the ip of the router though. It's the same as the Default Gateway that you get from the ipconfig result. You'll also need to get the DNS servers from the router it's in there you've just got to look for it and follow the directions. The sofware and layout of the actiontec's settings is a little different from that tutorial but usually it's just a little deeper int he same settings as the tutorial has ie;

tutorial = 1,2,3,4
Router = 1,2, 2a, 3, 4, 4a, 4b

But it works. Also, I'm almost certain that you won't get speeds like i'm seeing without a direct connecton to the router. Over wireless I'm not sure what your settings should be but go to Speakeasy.net and do the speed test at the bottom of the page to see what your throughput is and set your setting s accordingly. But even with a 54Mbps connection you should be able to get at least 120-200KB down speed.

Try it out and post ur results I'm interested to see what you get.

Hey, Kenc51, thanx that's where I got the original tutorials from but i didn't find the specific tutorial for my router and Azureus, Thanx u r the man! uh, hope ur not a chic if you are my bad.

I'm gonna try it out when I get back to the Crib 2night I think I was missing the UDP part of that tutorial.

I can only imagine what the possibilites are if that works.

5-6MBps down speed!!! =P~

Thanx for the tips guys! I will try the abovementioned suggestions and see what i can do. Though I must say that i'm bit confused as to the exact nature of my net connection. I think i'm supposed to be wireless yet i don't have a wireless card or any other wireless device in my pc. I think the reason i'm able to go on the web is because i was on this home network before we got the verizon service, before it we had a time warner cable net connection. I got a friend of mine run all kinds of cables between the 2 pcs to establish it and when the verizon guy came to put in FIOS he did say that i don't need a wireless device to go on the web because of all the work done by my friend. The way i connect to web is by plugging a phone jack into the mobo's lan port. Even though i'm not connected directly to the router i'm still getting almost same download speeds as my dad so its possible that i may get the same speeds as BIGg. Anyway, i'm explaining all this cause my setup is a little different ffrom other folks and i'm not sure what kind of reults i'll get after i start tweaking the router.

Just remember to take note of the routers settings before changing them, otherwise you could knock yourself off the interweb!

Yeah, I second that kenc, Barfly make sure you right down everything and do your best to remember the steps you took to get to a specific part of the router's settings. If worst comes to worst you could always reset the router to the default settings and start from scratch but I don't know what verizon may have done within the router's settings already to be compatable with your current intranet setup.

If you have a direct connection to the router you should deffinetly be able to fly with your down loads. You may need to modify your firewall settings both on the router and your pc. I get my fastest downloads when my pc firewall is set to allow all, but I never take the firewall off the router. If you have an older system your nic card may be limiting you as well. But firsts things first deffinetly get a starting point bandwidth from speakeasy.net so you can track what you've done and make sure you haven't limited you're self with the changes you make. Get ur static ip situation situated first and make sure you can connect to the web and test ur speeds again. Once that's all good then go on to the router tweaks at that point everything should be all good with extra gravy!

Good luck :)

Yezzer, thanx for the link kenc, that fixed my nat firewall test failure problem.
Don't ask me why i didn't think of opening the UDP up I don't know.

Showing the noob in me I guess.

What's even more funny is that I had to do the exact same setup with my old comcast account. Go figure.

Hey Barfly, I just noticed your Mobo in your signature. You've got 2 pci-X 16x slots and 1 pci-xpress 8x slot does that mean you can connect 3 Grafx cards to ur board and have them work simultaneously?

Guys, thanks for all the suggestions! I haven't been onlne for the past couple of days as i have been experiencing some issues with my pc and i had tro reinstall windows. After i put all the programs and games back i'll start playing with the router.

To answer BIGg question about my mobo, i don't think its possible to run 3 cards on it, i can run 2 8800 sized cards in SLI but i think if i'll get a second card i'll loose the PCI-E x8 slot and 1 regular PCI slot, may be if the cards are single spaced it could work, but i'm just not sure about that. I actually haven't thought about running 3 cards, but i may be getting another 8800GTS and try SLI, i got room for it and a PSU that handle both cards. I thought the Crosshair had the same PCI-E slots that my board has, isnt that so?

Nah, I've got 2x16xPCIE's and no 8XPCIE I think you can run 3 GFX cards in your mobo. Oh, and I'm definately hatin on your supported 16GB of ram! :x I mean Im still using XP Pro now but when I upgrade to Vista in about a year (just intime for the "Just a lil' less buggy version") that 16GB would be great. :) But then again I'll probly have a whole new Mobo, CPU, Ram configuration anyway so It won't really matter.

Well, i think to run 3 GPUs they'll have to take up only one slot not 2. I think that i'm better off running 2 8800GTS than 3 lesser cards. My theory is that this board is setup this way to run 2 vid cards and 1 PhysX card.
