HDTV TV Tuner/Video Capture

Post by NAiLs »

Does anyone know of an HDTV TV Tuner/Video capture card that can record digital television from a cable box? I'm thinking ahead of my time right now, but I'd love to have the ability to record HDTV on my PC, rather than getting a DVR. Something like recording Planet Earth would have been sweet since I didn't pick up an HDTV set until after the series premiered on Discovery Theatre. I poked around a little and saw that the ATi HDTV Wonder will only record OTA (Over The Air) HDTV signals, but cannot record signals from a cable box.

There has got to be something out there, but I guess I don't know where to look.

This will be going into a system w/ an Athlon XP 3000+ with 2GB of RAM (Or a 2600+ w/ 1GB of RAM) and will be running XP Pro w/ SP2 and has a 500GB HDD.

Here's an old piece of info that may interest you.
An important note about HDTV via cable and satellite: until the arrival of CableCard and future technologies, recording HD content from these sources is problematic at best and impossible at worst due to existing encryption in place. Several cards such as the Divco Fusion HDTV5 and the Avermedia AverTVHD MCE A180 offer limited support for nonencrypted content, but this is very limited because very little nonencrypted content exists.

Hmmm... interesting. Granted you say that is an "old" piece of info, but if it's still true today, then I'm not going to even bother. I'm just curious though because I saw a copy of an episode for Planet Earth, but I think it was too soon to see it for it to be from the official DVD launch. Yes, I know there are people who somehow get their hands on the stuff before official release, but it makes me wonder yet.

CC's(cable cards) are available but the encryption problem still exists.
Although I've read somewhere there are ways around it, just like everything else!

I have the Hauppauge HVR-1600 which does OTA HD but not cable or sat. box HD.
To be honest I havent tried it out yet, I still need to get an antennae.
