baking a chipset

i was wondering, can a motherboard operate at all if the processor is absent, i have a junk XFX board, but a processor i want to keep, can the board still work w/out it(work being...the chipset warm up- i also dont want to kill the PSU)

Yes it can, the computer will turn on with just the mobo and PSU then do nothing... If you can get that far, there's no catastrophic fatal hardware failure with those parts.
However before pluging in the CPU, you need to verify that the mobo regulator's blocking transistor(s) is/are still functional, and didn't pass 12V through to the Processor socket or memory slots.
eg, you should not be able to measure 12V on any pins in the CPU socket or memory slots.

thats what the soyo is gonna be for, the xfx is toast, the AGP was definately gone arleady and probably the mem slots also
so if i plug a mobo w/out the CPU in to power, press the start button and the fans spin and PSU turns on, does this mean a good board?(this is the soyo)

If you can plug the PSU in, and jump the connector off with a fan plugged in, I'm assuming it would be fine.
If it doesn't spin the fans up or post with the CPU, it's the CPU...

I did exactly that, fired my Intel MOBO by loosing the heatsink on the chipset. I heard a loud pop and sizzle. The next thing I noticed was a white powder sprayed out around the chipset onto the MOBO. This was not good.
So, the MSI 865P Neo was the only board handy enough to replace the Intel board. It was a mixed blessing since the Intel board could NOT OC and the MSI could. But, the Intel board had PATA and SATA with built on LAN 10/100/1000.
So, yes, a chipset can blow!
