need help dialing into another computer via 56k

Post by HONkUS »

Hey everybody heres the deal.

Up at work we have a PC we are using as a Notes server (not my decision btw) anyway we have for several years replicated our data every night between our "server" and our home computer for backup reasons. its worked great for 3 years and now suddenly for no apparent reason we are getting a 777 error saying that the receiving modem (the one in our server) is out of order whenever we try to dial into it from home. I have checked and re-checked both machines both modems are able to make out going calls and we've even called the phone company out to look at both ends of the line. No one can find anything wrong! no settings have been changed or anything! does anyone have any ideas on how I can get out of this mess? we haven't been able to replicate our data in over two weeks and its driving me nuts trying to fix it. I know theres no problem to big for LR so im asking for help!

Thanks guys!

Error 777 usually means the modem is fecked.
Try reinstalling the drivers, or you can hyperterminal into the modems COM port to run diagnostics tests.

Goto the properties of the modem and check what com port it's on (usually COM 3 or 1/2 if serial)
Then goto start/run and type "hyperterminal"
Once hyperterminal is open, select the COM port for your modem (Don´t select the modem driver!)

once the connection is established, type "ATZ" and press enter. See if it gives you an "OK"
if it does, type "ATDT XXXXX" (XXXX = dialup No for your ISP)

See if it then dials out ok with no error on the terminal screen.

ATDT means attention then open a dial tone.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks!

Using Hyper Terminal helped me establish that one of the modems is FUBAR hopefully the one I ordered from newegg wont be DOA, it wouldn't surprise me considering what a headache this has been so far lol.

So are you going to smash the old one once you get everything up and running? Smash? Pics? :partyman:
